Star Control Lives!

Hello,
I just finished UQM (with the help of walkthroughs and the wiki), and I did it using Utwigs, because all my Pkunks died. It was much harder because the Utwig Juggers are slower and can't fire sideways. I had 5 Juggers, and I needed all of them. My Precursor ship had 250 crew in it.
Everytime the green balls for fireballs touched me, I'd turn on my shield to survive. I'd intentially run into the green balls to push my self in the opposite direction really fast, so it's difficult to get hit by the Sa Matra. I'd fly very fast, and when I move near the Sa Matra, I'd turn around towards it and keep firing at the red shield generators.
After destroying the shield generators, I'd destroy the fireballs (more important to destroy than the green balls), and escape, and send in your presursor ship (e.g. Vindicator, etc.) to enter the Sa Matra...
I was so happy when I finished the game . I just wanted to tell everyone that you can beat the Sa Matra without the Pkunk Furys, but it's harder without them. The furys are faster, can fire sideways, and reincarnate (randomly). Hope this helps

Avatars, all the way. It isn't easy, but they can cut through the quan, and the sa-matra.

Furies are so good at killing the Sa-Matra, though. I've done it multiple times with just one, and I'm not even that good at the combat.
I'll agree about the avatars, though. They're definitely my first choice with the Ur-Quan, and my second choice with the Sa-Matra.
In fact, when attacking the Sa-Matra, the Juggers are, like, the fourth or fifth on my list. Let's see... 1) Furies. No doubt about it. Faster than the Sa-Matra's bullets, not only turns on a dime but actually does somersaults and handstands on a dime, can broadside and may spontaneously regenerate. 2) Avatar. Not fast, but has the durability to take a beating, and if the repulsors don't keep you away, they'll chew through the shields like nothing else can. And, they're just cool. 3) Terminators. Faster than juggers, can shoot and shield at the same time, and, most importantly, they'll destroy the shields very quickly, almost as fast as the Avatar does. 4) I guess the Jugger, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe I should try it with a Supox ship, or maybe even an Arilou ship.
Dangit, now I want to load the game and try it again.

We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

Arilou worked well when I tried it. I could not get teh Avatars close enough to be effective, though. Perhaps it was bad luck of where I started and bad luck that the fireballs came in between firing angles, preventing me from zapping them before they hit.
One time I brought a fleet of ships that should do badly, just to see how it would work.
The ZFP took down one generator through sheer luck of initial placement.
Cruiser got three shots in, two were lucky enough to hit a generator.
Syreen were fried with prejudice.
Thraddash were effective at protecting themselves, but could not attack the generators effectively, and eventually they were caught with too little battery to evade the fireballs. With skill, this could be a good ship for this purpose.
My Druuge had a bad starting position and got fried, but that seems like another potentially doable one.
