There's a starmap generator in SVN, created by fOSSiL, which creates very pretty starmaps from description files containing the star and constellation data.
One of the maps generated by this program will probably be included with the next release of UQM.

So there's a way to use that generator right now?

Ah yes, I forgot about the map generator. It's in directory trunk/tools/map of the UQM SVN repository and requires SDL, SDL_image, SDL_ttf and libpng, but I expect you'd prefer a binary.

Heres a non-spoiler map of just the stars:

And a printable 8.5x11 version with some resource hints:

Yep, a binary would be nice. But more detailed instructions would work too.   Huh
Would greatly appreciate it if someone would give me such instructions or a binary.  Grin

Why not include the original color hyperspace map? It looks nice and has the alien spheres of influence as of SC1 - which helps get a new player started, but doesn't really spoil much like the white map does.

We can't, for copyright reasons. But the new generated starmap we were talking about was created as a replacement for this map. It also shows the SoIs as they were before the start of SC2, and it also looks nice.

I managed to put together a Map generator Windows binary (including the required libraries; ridiculously large 3 MB ZIP). The whole thing is a bit of a mess, I'm afraid; those libraries are definitely not optimally compiled in any way, but it works. I'm not going to write instructions because there has got to be an easier and more elegant way to do this than what I did (basically, added FreeType and SDL_ttf to what I'd used a while back to compile UQM).

Nice! That map's going to be an excellent addition to UQM. Smiley

Anyway, a general question: why are the "unknown" spheres of influence (Pkunk/Thraddash/Druuge) in the map? I mean, why specifically those races out of all the unknown-yet ones?

Because that's how it was drawn up in the original paper starmap that came with the game.

Ooooh that's a good question. I remember pouring over the starmap when I first got the game back in '93. The unknown spheres of influence got me all excited and made me want to fly to those areas at once to see what was there.

I guess, story-wise, it is an Alliance of Free Stars Map, and those are regions where the members know an alien race exists, but haven't formally engaged with them yet. Clearly the Alliance did not know of the Supox and Utiwg.

"This map details the spatial relationship between the stars in our known region of the galaxy, as well as the spheres of influence for each alien race as of AD 2133."
From the original map.

Note that SC2 starts in 2155.

I always wondered what Alliance race had contact with the Druuge.

Possible condidates are Yehat, Syreen, and Arilou. However, I don’t recall any conversations with any of these races indicating they had ever met the Druuge. In any case, I wonder if it’s possible some Alliance members made some deals with the Druuge in the final, desperate phases of the war.

Thanks!  Grin
But I'm still lost...
I tried "mapgen -n -i" (and some other combinations) at a command prompt, the computer processed something for a few seconds.... I checked starmap.png... and it was still a blank grid.  Huh
