But I'm still lost...
I tried "mapgen -n -i" (and some other combinations) at a command prompt, the computer processed something for a few seconds.... I checked starmap.png... and it was still a blank grid.  Huh
-i specifies a configuration script; the only full configuration provided is large300.map (the other .map files are included from it). To adjust the output, large300.map in a text editor. mapgen also needs to be told where your fonts (the ones referenced in the configuration) are. So, for example, on this XP box I get the basic large map with:

Code:
mapgen -i large300.map -f c:\windows\fonts -n

If you are missing text, make sure that you have the following font files in the specified font directory:
  • Arialbd.ttf
  • Times.ttf
  • Arialnb.ttf
  • Arialbd.ttf
Note that if you're on *nix, the case of the filenames of the fonts matters. Make sure that they are as listed here (or edit large300.map).

Arialnb.ttf is not necessary in the copy I uploaded (changed to Arialbd because I can't find Arial Narrow on any of my systems!).

Woah, this is pretty amusing!  I like it! Grin
What controls the placement/number of stars/constellations? It would be pretty amazing to get it to do something like this thing does...

What controls the placement/number of stars/constellations?
The contents of the map are more or less completely controlled by the *.map files. stars.map defines stars (position, name, size, colour), clusters.map defines the clusters (name, lines) and large300.map contains the rest of the information. The formats of these files are described in the files themselves.

Have you ever considered making a coloured version? Like just the star colours? Would be a lot of tedious work, but useful.

Of course, this clear, white map is better for printing than mine is.

Gidday mate, did you ever make a spoiler-free version of this fantastic map?

Cough cough, I made a similar map (black and white) with no spoilers

Heres a non-spoiler map of just the stars:

And a printable 8.5x11 version with some resource hints:

Count Choc your map is quite nice but not quite as nice as the other fellow's. I've alwasy been keen for someone to replicate the original starmap verbatim.

I vote for a map with MORE spoilers, as many as possible!

Also, I used Novus's command line and it worked for me, you can get it here:

Hello all, my apologies for not keeping up to date on the forum, im a bad lurker Sad

I shall reupload the full version of the map to rapidshare when I find my archive disk of projects... currently the whole kit and kaboodle is MIA.
I worked on a restoration project on the color version of the star map, working from the various scans already on the net.  I even worked to take away the bleaching in the upper right and corner... and then i saw a real copy of the map, and realized the bleaching was supposed to be there.  It somewhat spoiled my taste for long term tedious photoshop projects for a while :/  I may attempt a somewhat 'colorized' version of the B&W map when I find my copies of what I had done before to work from, but it would be sometime in the future.
See y'all on the flipside!  --StarController
