But I'm still lost...
I tried "mapgen -n -i" (and some other combinations) at a command prompt, the computer processed something for a few seconds.... I checked starmap.png... and it was still a blank grid.  Huh
-i specifies a configuration script; the only full configuration provided is large300.map (the other .map files are included from it). To adjust the output, large300.map in a text editor. mapgen also needs to be told where your fonts (the ones referenced in the configuration) are. So, for example, on this XP box I get the basic large map with:

Code:
mapgen -i large300.map -f c:\windows\fonts -n

If you are missing text, make sure that you have the following font files in the specified font directory:
  • Arialbd.ttf
  • Times.ttf
  • Arialnb.ttf
  • Arialbd.ttf
Note that if you're on *nix, the case of the filenames of the fonts matters. Make sure that they are as listed here (or edit large300.map).

Arialnb.ttf is not necessary in the copy I uploaded (changed to Arialbd because I can't find Arial Narrow on any of my systems!).
