What would you want in SC1 remake
« on: July 25, 2006, 09:35:42 pm »

I was looking into making a SC1 remake...  Hopefully keeping things quite simple.  But not being totaly faithful to the original.  What would you like to see in something like that?

Make the map bit more easier to understand.. Maybe even like the one in the dreaded SC3. Oh, yeah, include graphics from Ur-Quan Masters, a scenario editor, scenarios from Sega version and maybe even SC2 ships. But, I wonder could anyone do all that. Well, a guy can dream.

map idea - done.  I actually liked the sc3 planet maps.  sc2 ships - not likely (just the sc1 ships, seem like a lot to me).  Scenario editor, yeah that might be doable.

Mmm, I was thinking of working on something along these lines. Maybe instead of remaking SC1, make a fan based sequel with the system, that way you can put in the races from SC2 and new ones, people would find it more fun (because of the diversity).

What would also rock would be a more strategic style game play, more micromanaging, etc.

Hmm, how would you include the SC2 races/ships?

The game is set up as a faceoff between the Hierarchy and Alliance ships. If you simply created a "SC2 faction", it would be very unbalanced (ie having the Chmmr, Khor-Ah, and Utwig on the same team).

I'd be very interested to see it done, but it'd have to be balanced somehow.

How about some decent sound and good music?  The sound in SC1 was good for sixteen years ago... but it's still from sixteen years ago.

If you want to include SC2 ships, I would say that there's no sensible way to include them all.  You could make a "New Alliance" faction, but who would you pair it up against?  The "New Hierarchy" wouldn't be nearly powerful enough with the sole addition of the Thraddash, and the Kohr-Ah and Druuge won't work well with the Hierarchy.

I guess if you made a couple of very powerful new Hierarchy races to balance out the Orz and the Utwig, it could be done.  That's what it would take.

IIRC, some of the scenarios in SC1 limited the ships that could be built on each side. There's no particular reason to have fixed factions; they could be scenario-specific.

True, there were a number of scenarios like that. But what about for scenarios like "Escalation" (my personal favorite) or "Total War"?

Maybe the best thing to do would be make the map editor have the ability to select what SC2 ships are included for each of the two factions. (IE, Alliance gets Zoq-Fot while Hierarchy gets Thraddash...and nothing else for that particular scenario.)

I think so long as you left them out of the sc1 senarios it wouldn't be a problem.  For instance, you can Androsynth in SC2's melee.  Just because the ship is there for melee doesn't mean it has to be used in a campaign.

In regards to recreating the SC1 total war senario and similar things, just leave them out.  Heck, you could make a senario editor and make SC2 senarios.  Zog Fot defends themselves against the constant incursions of the doctrinal war, for instance.

I think for any successor to the SC series needs editors, like all nice games do nowadays.  A senario editor, a campaign editor, and a ship editor.  Make new senarios, campaigns, even ships.  Heck, you could use that to mod it into anything you pleased, like a Star Wars campaign.

I think one easy way to improve the immersion would be to just describe the universe a bit by using secenario intro and extro slides (images+text), and maybe also have some images when finding artifacts. Just something visual to interupt the gameplay graphics, like those dissection pics from Xcom/ufo.

Hey, how about making an entire campaign for Alliance and Hierarchy for the first war, second docrinal war and second New Alliance war? Just put bunch of scenarios with one main ship that has one  Precursor artifact and uniqe name that musn't be destroyed and so forth. It would be great if someone made that remake.

I'd rather see a SC 1-2 thing with the races from SC2, like I said I'd add newer races for the interest of the player and to balance the sides out, but then again I would like to play SC1 in a grander glory...

I'd like to see a "campaign tree". You start with only one mision, but after you beat it, one or two more missions will pop up. Also, maybe if you complete certian requirements, you would unlock a secret mission.

I'm encouraged by the volume of StarControl 1 discussion and this thread that's going on here. I've been away for a while, decided to drop in today, and am quite pleased. I may make my return... well, I'll check in more frequently at any rate.

I had a myriad of what I though were the awesomest ideas for a remake of SC1 on the discussion boards at the pages of now and forever, which appear again to be in a state of some disrepair. They involved detailed plans for making a game with levels like the SC1 full game with conversation screens, multibranching storyline, and special captian abilities like in Advanced Wars, but in space.

However, seeing as you want something simple, I will refrain from copying and pasting the entire 5 page document that I have on me at this very moment, here.

No way, I'd better take a look at that thread.

Basicly I've just started on the engine.  As I do the engine I'd be looking to implement some of the story.

I'm mostly concentrating on a sort of campaign mode, with things like you talked about.  Alien conversations were in.  I didn't think about special captain abilities but I did think of allowing the captain to find special items and power ups.

I envisioned more of a fleet commander rather than a captain.  I'll post some screen shots as soon as I have some to post.  I don't think the art will be that different from the original games as I plan on ripping most of it but the layout will be different.

But I do want to hear any and all of your ideas.
