Er... Elite? For Christ's sake, people, Elite?
Apart from that:
Rainbow Islands (arcade) Spare Change (Apple ][) Dragon Quest IV (Famicom) Clocktower (Super Famicom) Sweet Home (Famicom) Lords of Midnight (Spectrum)
Nowadays the games that really eat my life are the Baldur's Gate and Sakura Wars series. Immersive as games used to be... sigh...

Ah, I had many favorites.
Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2 Tie Fighter, the dos version (I always liked it better than x-wing) Test Drive 3 Jumpman (c64) Tongue of the Fatman Mechwarrior, and of course, Mechwarrior 2 Aces of the Pacific Bards Tale and Ultima series California Games (c64) Summer Olympics (c64)
That's about all I can remember now.. I'm sure others will come to me later..

I can't believe that there are still people around that played Ascendancy....
I know that this might be misspeaking myself, but, What about Star Flight 1 ??
Seriously... if you read the manual, including the "history of arth" without laughing, you're probably reading the french side j/k

There was a pretty active Ascendancy community for quite some time. Â Last I heard, several players had begun work on moding the game and fixing some problems. Â There was even an enhanced playermade AI floating around for awhile (not the antagonizor AI released by Logic Factory, which wasn't bad either).
Unfortunatly, Logic Factory (the makers) went completely missing in action. Â The main community was centered around their websites forum and a handful of websites. Â Logic Factorys forums eventually closed after a few years of silence from the developers and as far as I can tell most of the fansites died shortly thereafter.
Logic Factory has recently redone their website, and are touting a sequel "in the works" Â a massively multiplayer online Ascendancy. Â Forums, hype and any new news other then a redone website is unfortunatly non existant for the time being.
At any rate, maybe they'll be able to pull through. Â What was your favorite Ascendancy race btw? Â Mine was definatly Shevar.
*Edit* I did some digging and did actually find a few remaining Ascendancy fan sites.. though it looks like they're on their last leg. At any rate, probably worth browsing for old times sake.

Regarding Ascendancy, I usually played as the govorom, since I had a habit of colonizing every single planet with a xeno dig, whether the planet itself was worth it or not. So, it was kind of nice to have the planet change from a giant lifeless husk into a prosperous cornicopia.
I had been on the logic factory forums for a bit, but there was never any response from the company, and they've had some wierd down times, wherein there wasn't even a "page being updated" screen, so I think they might be down to minimal personnel/money. Did you ever try their other game (s) i.e. Tone Rebellion?

Ahem...
MULE!
Also, regarding XP/2000, are you guys aware that there exists a Compatibility mode in these two operating systems? All you have to do is right click on the file in question and click on the compatibility tab in the resulting dialog box. In some cases I think you have to create a shortcut to the file and then right click on the shotcut in order to get the compatibility tab but I'm not entirely sure. XP has this inherent capability but you have to upgrade Win2k to SP 2 or 3 and then run this command line:
regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll
This should add the compatibility mode. It doesn't work for everything but it works for a lot of stuff, most importantly Incubation (If you like X-COM you'll probably like this) and Darklands (I'm shocked and amazed that I didn't (or at least think I didn't) see anyone mention the king of CRPGs).

All of the aforementioned games are great and most of them are true classics, but you neglect the greatest game of it's time: Wasteland.
Oh well. Jagged Alliance 1/2 (altho 2 is fairly new, it is soooo good that it is worth a mention) Anyone mention Lemmings? Fave "old" console game tho.... Spy Hunter (And woe to those who couldnt get to the other vehicles![Although sometimes I would rip my hair out getting to them]) Breakout was good. Whoever said Aces over the Pacific is a genius though. Much props. And for those wayway back fans, Chuck Norris or Combat on the Atari. Gotta mention Oregon Trail (Many gradeschool days in the computer lab were wasted *sighs*)
