Oh no! More lemmings! and lemmings 2. Lemmings 1 is pretty bad, but oh no more lemmings is quite challenging and lemmings 2 was great because there was a massive variety of possible skills to give your lemmings.

Archon Ultra. It was made by TFB, and it's like chess + fighting, very cool.

Lode Runner: Mad Monks' revenge. Lots of fun, and a good puzzle game with plenty of nifty items and clever levels. It comes with a level editor too, and that's always a good bonus for any game.

How the heck has no-one mentioned Tyrian yet?  Everything else reasonably popular has been put up (thank you, German, for finally giving the Monkey Island series), but Tyrian's almost a legend...
As for the Sega-CD crowd... who here remembers Popful Mail?  Dark Wizard?  Willy Beamish?
C'mon, SCD should have survived MUCH longer than it did on Popful Mail and the Lunar Duet alone.

I used to love Zelda 2 : The Quest of Link back on the old NES. Otherwise I'll go with the Dune games on PC (the first two), Monkey Island, and Space Quest! Day of the tentacle was good as well, and Beneath a Steel Sky. Action wise well... Duke Nukem always cracked me up, i loved that.

Oh, this thread reminds me of so many good games Wink
Should be organized though, we keep repeating the same games throughout the thread! so I'll repeat some of my favorites too! Wink

Loom was a wonderful game, all the Quest for Glorys (still have them, except 5) and Space Quests, Diablo and Starcraft aren't considered "old" enough for this category I guess Tongue Dune 1 AND 2, XCOM was abit annoying but nice, Syndicate.. haha that was a good one. It wouldn't be the same without my nights over nights of Doom and DN3D and Quake/Quake2..
And many more I have no time to think of right now.

Oh, there's some game from 2000 actually, "Soulbringer" - anyone heard of it? had some bugs in it and I suppose didn't make it too well, but the story was very good.

I consider games "old" or "classics" if they won't run on my computer any longer and I can only dream of the good times I had with them...

Some come back though - like SCII-UQM!

In the RPG genre I loved the *Bard's Tale series. *Bard's Tale 1 was the best of the bunch, but the others were worth mention.

Also, someone mentioned Blue Max for the commodore 64.  You can't mention the C64 without mentioning *Jumpman.  An amazingly simple, yet fun and addictive game.  Also *Summer Games and *Winter Games.  Or how about *Temple of Apshai, or *Gateway to Apshai?  These were the simplest of rpgs.

But back to IBM based PC's:
I agree with the *X-com sentiment.  That was a great game, I didn't like the 2nd as much, and never got to play apocolypse.  For some reason I really liked *The Prince of Persia.  It was the first game with really fluid movements.  It just looked really cool.  *Out of this World was really neat too.  It had great graphics for the time and the gameplay was interesting.  Another great game was *Alone in the Dark.  It was pretty much the predecessor to *Resident Evil, another great game.  I loved the hand drawn backgrounds and the way the camera angles change while you're playing.
Going back a ways, *Zork 1 2 and 3 were a lot of fun even though they were completely text based.  Everyone's mentioned these, but the *King's Quest series was great.

We need more original games now a days.  They made them great back in the day.

Also *Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters was one of my all time favorites.  Grin  I still love playing it.  What a superb storyline and innovative gameplay.  Many thanks to Fred and Paul for such a fantastic game.  It kept me enthralled for many hours. and I have pages of notes and maps etc. Smiley   Tons of fun.

What I miss most in the new graphics-overloaded surround-sounded games is the simple "Spielvergnuegen" (gaming-pleasure) that makes you go on for hours and weeks!

I didn't read thruogh the whole thread to see if a solution was posted, but X-Com was also released as a Windows version (music/sounds work and no crashing). I have it but... uh... it's not exactly a legally obtained copy:)

the super games of my younger days:

* lands of lore (cost me my math exam, but I have no regrets:)
* star control 2 (obviously!)
* dune (the most fantastic adventure game ever)
* dune 2 (I'm still primarily a RTS fan today and dune 2 started it all)
* flahsback
* betrayal at krondor (the best RPG game ever)
* privateer
* x-wing
* tie fighter

I see Star Control 2 is on underdogs. but is Star Control 1 available like that anywhere on the web? I did a search on underdogs and google but could not find it anywhere.

oh yes, and I played through DOOM in my 386, full screen mind you (even turned off the status bar), the speed was something like 1-2 FPS and I didn't even mind.
