Question: What the crap is the forum's logo supposed to be? Looks like some kinda weird tentacle...hand thingy.

Could someone explain to me just what that is? Huh

I think it's one of the cover arts of the first Star Control game...

Boxart for the second game, not the first.  From the 3DO version.

I can't answer what those hands actually are; I never could figure that out.  They don't seem to match any creature actually from the game.

But then, the PC boxart has this creature that didn't match anything from the game either.

In SC1 the hand contained stars. "Having in the hand" probably symbolised "control". So "Star Control". The SC2 version seems to be a derivation of that.

I always thought the hand on the top was an Ur-Quan, but I can't think of the bottom.

*laf* You know, the box art and the game art on both StarControls (the third doesn't exist) NEVER matched. I believe some of the arts were even done by Boris Valejo, a fantastic artist in his own right, but aparently he never actually PLAYED the game.

The same happens on sci-fi books all the time, so I guess we can't complain. If only fantasic artists were fans of the work they were commissioned to do.

Some related TFB quotes:

Fred Ford:
Quote
As we were porting the PC version to the Genesis, Accolade came to us and said, "We got an artist to do the Genesis cover. What would you like him to do?" Not knowing (unless we were psychic) that it was Boris, we said, "Well, just have him make the claw cooler." And Accolade said, "Uh, Okay." It was only much later and to our dismay that we discovered the opportunity that had been lost.

Paul or Fred:
Quote
Sometimes we have a lot of control and particiaption with the artists (as with Erol's drawings in the SC1 manual and the George Barr's illustrations in the cluebook.) Other times, we never even hear about the artwork until after it is done (like Boris' covers)
