WTF!!! Gal Civ II expansion plot == SC2 plot!!!
« on: October 10, 2006, 06:24:57 pm »

Hmmmm, I was just reading a preview of the expansion pack to Galactic Civilizations II when I made a stunning realisation...

They stole StarCon 2's plotline!!!

Kind of...

Korath = Kohr-Ah?
Kynn = Ur-Quan?

Looks that way to me...

Read the preview, it's kinda funny...

Heh, that's kinda funny actually. Now if they'd toss in some cowardly mollusks, I'm sold!

Seriously though, I was very tempted to pick up Galactic Civ until I read there was no tactical space combat (like MoO 2).   Oh well. Undecided

The ship builder in Gal Civ 2 is really fun to fiddle with, but I felt a little let down by the game otherwise.

The ship builder is the only fun point, the rest of it is just another civ rehash.

At least Alpha Centauri was interesting Tongue

The Kohr-Ah are flawed.  They must die.
If you follow the Kohr-Ah, you should make whatever final preparations are preferential to your species.  You have three of your "minute" time intervals to do so.

Y'know, oddly enough I liked Gal Civ 2, but hated Alpha Centauri.  That game confused me to heck.

I fully admit that Gal Civ 2 isn't really deep enough in any area to really keep my attention for long either.  Other than the ship builder and events, kinda like castles...

Gal Civ II's expansion pack also looks to be a depth-wise improvement on the game, providing more stuff...

I believe GC2 does feature tactical combat though, although I thihk GC1 didn't...

Also, GCII isn't actually a Civ-rehash :-) It's a 4X game. You remember Master of Orion, right?

As for Alpha Centauri. One of my favourites game. Ever.

Sorry, there's no tactical mode for GC2.

You can watch your ships duke it out up close and personal (as long as it isn't 1v1), but you have no real control over the battles.

It's still lightyears above MOO3.  Tongue

Y'know, I never got MOO 3 and can't reallllly say one way or the other, but everyone I know really disparages the game.  Something about too much micromanagement?

Yeah, there's a combat viewer (which looks nice, but dosen't give you tactical control).  Also, compared to MOO 2 the things you can put on your ships are kinda limited.  No 'special' kinds of weaponry, for instance, like fighter craft (in moo2 they're an attack that always hits the weakest facet of an opponent's ship), though there is a simple rock/paper/sicssors thing going on with beam/missle/gun and shield/missledef/armour going on.

Ugh, MoO3 made Star Control 3 look awesome. It was that bad.

First there were the graphics; it looked as if my Super Nintendo could have produced a more eye-pleasing product (especially in combat). Then there was the ever so irritating "feature" where you couldn't really micromanage anything. The computer would pretty much make all of the micromanaging decisions for you, which ran contrary to the previous games. Last, and worst of all, was the horrible, horrible interface.  It was very common that you would need half a dozen clicks to access critical information.  Terrible.

Anyways, the point being, I have yet to see a 'true' successor to MoO2. Its sad. You'd think after all these years someone would have the bright idea of taking all of MoO2s (and MoO1s for that matter) greatness and jazz up the graphics, features, etc.

MOO2 was a great game, but have you ever tried Space Empires? I liked that very much! It's an awsome 4X strategy game, although it lacks a story development. I played Space Empires III and IV, and now I'll get Space Empires V as soon as it is published Cheesy

I'm eagerly looking forward to SE V :-)

Actually, if you like MOO-style games, GalCiv2 is brilliant. And the company supports their products for a long time, with fixes and new features.

The main developer admits the SC influence here, though that was about the main game, not the new expansion pack.
