Both these suggestions have been discussed extensively before. Much of the fun in UQM comes from finding and decoding the relevant information from the immense amounts of often cryptic alien chatter; adding any sort of automated assistance would eliminate this and make the game much easier (Star Control 3's ICOM system shows how bad this idea is, especially since the hand-holding is mixed with information you don't get anywhere else!). For the free-form note-taking you need in UQM, pencil and paper (or a good text editor, if you prefer) tend to work much better than building some sort of log facility into UQM.

The lazy part of me would like it, but I know I didn't enjoy Super Metroid just _because_ there was an auto map (and it was also much more linear). New SMB also showed most areas you could unlock on the map, and that sort of took away the mystery. I want to feel there might be more to a game than what I see. A log or map 'belittles' the game world, I feel.

Whatever happened to a game that you bought and played for six months - a year to finish, in the process causing a few forests to go 'AAGH!' at the amount of paper that developed on top of the desk the pc sat on? That was fun.

Hopefully games with first-person dungeons have gone the way of the dodo, because that's the only type of game that springs to my mind when I think of reams and reams of paper wasted.
