Many French people have an indifferent-to-hostile attitude to most languages, not English. They have a fanatical hatred to English.

While in France I got better results from them using my native Afrikaans (a Dutch variant spoken in South Africa) or German than English. Actually, using English in France is tantamount to walking around with a sign stating 'Ignore me.'

Still, based on the reactions I got using German and Afrikaans, next time I go to France I am learning French first.

Maar ek stem heeltemaal saam met hulle. Donnerse toeriste.

Indeed, even if I wouldn't call it fanatical. I was recently visiting Paris with my girlfriend, and we had no problems whatsoever when speaking french. The one time I had any trouble was when I had to speak to someonewithout my girlfriend, and thus had to fall back upon english. Then again, Parisians are famously arrogant, so it might be dfferent in the rest of the country.

If that's what it's like there, I'd say f*!k em. Go somewhere where they actually like you or understand that you use English, not go into snobbery and crap like that.

Yes, because it is quite snobby and very bad form not to learn the language of your foreign vistors so that you can cater to their whims. Or is it bad form to go somewhere and ignorantly expect them to speak your language and know your customs? I can never quite remember which way that works. Still, I'll keep in mind next time I go to England that everyone there speaks finnish, it'll be nice to not worry about all that icky foreign jabberwook.

I'd love to help, but unfortunately I don't speak the language.
You don't speak Swedish? In that case, you've fooled me for at least three years (communicating only through an English-language board helps, I guess).

Or I'm cleverly making up excuses as to not be drafted into a translation project. Who knows?

I'd say the latter.

It's not the fact that they don't speak English, it's the fact that they won't try to help you if you speak it, as I said, it's like they really hate us out there.

So if someone walks into a english shop, and speaks only french, any and all englishmen will be ready and eager to help?

Please note that this question is not meant to be agressive or smart-alecky in any way. I have always gotten the impression from my british friends that they mirror the french animosity to the english, and at times exceed it. Thus I've always assumed that any bastardly behaviour the french might engage in towards english-speaking tourists was answered in kind when french tourists came to england.
