Pkunk, Yehat Encounter
« on: December 02, 2006, 06:17:30 am »

It's always bugged me how Hayes gives you a report of alien genecide ("six telepaths passed out, woke up later and said something very wrong just happened") when the Pkunk meet the Yehat seeing as how the Yehat don't actually kill the Pkunk. Don't ask me how I got thinking about this today, but it just occured to me that the entire Pkunk fleet being destroyed and Pkunk showing up later in the game is no inconsistency. Reincarnation ability, anyone?

Pkunk: Hello!

Yehat: Our fruity cousins? SQUAK! BRAAK! SQUAK!

*The Yehat go out of their way to exterminate every last Pkunk ship they find.

Yehat: What have we done? *sniffle*

*Pkunk reincarnate right into the midst of various Yehat colonies

Pkunk: Hello!

This is cannon now, right?

The vagueness of the report also leaves some leeway in the interpretation of events. Are you sure the Pkunk were actually killed in the first place?

I fail to see how this constitutes a projectile launching device.

I originally thought that too; no major combat could have taken place between the two species. The point of the topic is that I had a realization that if the entire Pkunk fleet got wiped out, it would not have stopped them. The Pkunk may have even planned for this sort of thing to occur.

Yes, I also get a rather strong impression from the Pkunk that they wouldn't fire on the Yehat if their lives depended on it. The Pkunk disappearing could be death and rebirth, infiltration and revolution or even a subtle form of assimilation. The interesting part is that it doesn't matter if the Pkunk disappear or not before you attack the Sa-Matra; only whether the Yehat civil war has started.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one. Grin

It's been a while since I played the game through with the Yehat side-quest. So I may be shaky on the details. But isn't it possible the Yehat blew many of the Pkunk to bits before cooler heads prevailed? It could be that the Pkunk just took a beating before charming their cousins.

Or is there something in the text which indicates no friendly fire?

Nothing that I recall. I personally cannot imagine the Pkunk absorption as being completely bloodless, though I doubt the Pkunk would fire on the Yehat given the peaceful nature of their mission (and their general attitude towards the Yehat and Reunification). I seem to remember that if you ask the Yehat what happened to the Pkunk fleet, they give a rather terse reply indicating that the Pkunk have been absorbed and that is all they will say on the matter.

Don't remember if that bit is in UQM though.

Also, I can't resist linking to zarla's picture about just this event.

Don't remember if that bit is in UQM though.

It is:
Quote from: Yehat
The Pkunk have been absorbed.
They are no more. This is how it should be.
Now the matter is settled, human. Do not be bringing it up again...

I'm inclined to think that this involves something like "Become like us or die!", considering that the Yehat seem to object to the Pkunk being (mostly) pacifists:
Quote from: Yehat
The cowards live?!! This is unbelievable!!
It is a SAD, SAD day to be hearing this thing from ye, human.
The P... the Pku... I canna even say their vile name!
The Pku... PKU-NK! are the greatest embarrassment our species has ever suffered!
Do not be calling these wretched creatures an offshoot of our species!
Better it is that ye be calling them GARBAGE or DROPPINGS!
Or better yet do not be talking about them at all!
