First of all, I am inviting everybody to join #uqm-arena also in quakenet, if you happen to prefer that server like I do.
Now then, i am also curious about whether there are people who might be interested in competetive UQM-gaming. If we would some day get a steady irc-channel where there are always (or nearly always) people willing to see, who the king is, there might be a chance for something like a 'ladder' or just a tournament for starters.
To sum it up: Is anyone interested in the possibilities? If yes, I suggest gathering up at that irc-channel (or whatever channel, mine was just a suggestion).

What exactly is wrong with irc.freenode.net? Also, you need to give the actual address to quakenet if you want anyone to join it.

Not that there is anything wrong with it, I just think that there are more gamers in quakenet, thus the channel might become more active there. I'm okay with anything, and there is no reason for not having multiple channels.

How does having more gamers on a network help? Does anyone on an IRC network ever do "/list" to see what other games are played from there? The only benefit I can see would be to people already on quakenet who use a retarded IRC client unable to handle multiple servers at once. The UQM netplay community is still small, and having multiple channels will spread the ranks too thin.
Everyone is ofcourse free to find matchups anywhere they want, but as far as the UQM team is concerned, if you're using IRC, #uqm-arena on irc.freenode.net is the official place. It's also the only arena channel where you'll find the creator of uqm netplay, namely me, helping out with troubleshooting.
Note that we intend to have some meta-server with a lobby at some point, obviating all of this.

Alright, I joined the channel on Freenode and it seems active enough.
The channel was only the secondary point of my original post though, but it seemed to be a cause for some dispute, thus leaving the primary point in it's shadow.
I was thinking about the possibilities of UQM being played on big events, such as Assembly in Finalnd, where there could be enough civilized people to see beyond the latest first person shooters. The first step is to get more people playing online.
