Discuss: Should SC1 be a download for the Wii virtual console?
« on: January 04, 2007, 10:11:15 am »

The Nintendo Wii can emulate the Sega Genesis.  Star Control 1 was released for the Genesis and therefore can be played on the Wii.  Would a new generation of gamers getting addicted to the space combat gameplay help the process of having a new Star Control game made?

First of all, YES!  It would be awesome if Star Control 1 was released for the virtual console.  I would run to Wal-Mart and buy the classic controller right now, if Star Control 1 was available.

The thing about the genesis version is that the frame rate is incredibly slow; it is the first 12 megabit game (which was a lot at the time)  It's half as fast as Star Control 2, but it is still playable nonetheless.  I'm absolutely sure that can fix that; after all, they have improved the frame rate for Metal Slug, so it should be possible for Star Control 1.  Plus, the genesis version has more "full game" missions, which is perfect for the Wii.

It's the best way of getting Star Control's name out there; I myself have a Wii, and I'd love to have Star Control 1 or 2, or heck, even the new Star Control that TFB wants to make, in addition to a PC version.

Amen, they also worked on Tony Hawks purely for the Wii, which I've heard isn't doing so bad, so that helps them on favours for Nintendo Cheesy.

Care to elaborate on that?  Roll Eyes

I think it'd be an awesome addition, and it would raise the public awareness of Star Control, which is always a good thing. Grin

Wait, can't the Virtual Console also play 3do games? Because then we could have SC2, too... (but i could be wrong)

Why would you like to have SC 2 on Wii, when we already have UQM, don`t you care anything about UQM staff`s feelings! Thay have been pulling UQM for years!

If it was on wii, it could attract fresh, young minds, compared to UQM which (it seems to me anyways) has drawn on players who had the game in the past, and now just want a version they can run on windows.

Actually, I always thought that UQM would do well on XBox Live.  Once the multiplayer aspect is a bit more robust/polished, port UQM to XNA (if possible) and integrate with the XBox Live MP stuff, and you greatly increase its appeal and audience.  I think XBox Arcade has some free offerings; I can't see why this couldn't be free as well if people (MS, TFB, The UQM programmers) were willing.  It's more content for XBox and more exposure for UQM.  Definitely something you'd want to run past TFB before even THINKING of trying to make this happen, but I don't see any real conflicts of interest in that scenario.  Since it's based on the 3DO stuff, it's sort of geared towards presentation on a TV with a gamepad controller anyway, which is a bonus.

Actually, if you read the license for UQM, you'll find that TFB and the UQM developers have already given permission to do this (as long as it's free; commercial distribution of the content is not allowed).

Of course, the whole problem is convincing someone to port UQM to XNA (the UQM devs tend to have little interest in consoles).

I haven't played SC1, just UQM, so this would be a great introduction for myself and all the other unenlightened gamers out there.

However, there is one game that I do want to see more-the Mega Drive/Genesis remake of Starflight. That series is also in need of attention; after all, it inspired SC2!

Please put them together in one sentence. Geometry Wars was also supposed to be free...

Not exactly. It SC2 definately borrowed aspects of Starflight, but that can be attributed to the fact that they borrowed members of the team. I think, if I remember, Paul Reiche III was on the Starflight team.

Starflight was good, and well loved, but I could never get into it. Maybe I'll try again with an FAQ.

No, it can't.  VC currently emulates NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, MSX, and Neo Geo.

Actually, The Wii has games from the Sega Genesis, Turbografx 16, Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo 64. MSX and Neo Geo are currently not available on it.

And yes, I would LOVE to see both Star Control 1 and Starflight on the Virtual Console. For some reason Nintendo is currently releasing games most people have never heard of instead of Famous games like Super Mario Brothers 3, so I think both these games could have a good chance if anyone at Nintendo actually knows about them and they can get the rights.
