Let me clarify my previous ideas and respond to the original post here. First of all, I love Star Control. Why I love it is it's indepth story line that has only deepened as I've grown (in other words, when I was 15 I didn't get the Lovecraft and sci-fi references), which it wrapped so that it never got heavy. The combat was challenging at first but not so difficult that I ever lost. In short, it never failed on any level to make me feel good.
That "feel good" effect is why I love StarControl.
Strange Adventures in Infinite Space and it sequel Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space ... Sword of the Stars ... P.S. I have an Game Idea I want bounce off people just for opinions. If you willing to,listen to me babble on it I'll post it on the forums otherwise I'll leave it be.
These are all great games (I especally love the dolphin people in SotS). Of them the Infinite Space series was probably best for that "feel good" effect that I mentioned above. While design aspects and whatnot of other games are good, they so often get dark and heavy.
As for your game idea, hey, don't let public opinion stop you. Do what you want. However, keep in mind I may tear into you. it's nothing personal, but I think that game design is one of those dime-a-dozen things. But if you actually produce something, even a demo, you're much more likely to get respect for your idea.
