I've noticed that, both in the PC original and in UQM, sometimes when you spawn a portal you aren't automatically sucked in, instead you must turn or move a bit to enter the portal. Is it a bug, an intentional thing? Does it have a pattern? A cause?
Plus, will the portal stay there indefinitely if you just stay there without turning or thrusting? And if a ship comes and sucks you in its "black hole", after you exit the encounter will the portal be still there? If yes, it remains there even if you enter and exit a star system (moving via being sucked by ship "black holes")? And can you open another portal if you already have this one open? If yes, will the old portal disappear?
I'm just curious... Or is it more?
(And where is the code for the Portal Spawner and the other devices?)

I'm not sure how long it stays, but I'm pretty sure if you get sucked into a battle, the portal remains. I don't know enuogh about the code to answer the rest of your questions.
So? Is the non-sucking into the portal a bug or is it intentional?
I don't think anyone knows; it think it's been there since PC SC2. In any case, judging by what's going on in src/sc2code/hyper.c, I'd say the portals are supposed to have the same collision detection as normal stars and fleets.
