Question about SC1
« on: April 07, 2007, 10:34:01 pm »

Is it possible to get/downlaod a copy of SC1 legally anymore, or is it lost to the ages? Just wondering, as I'd like to try it...

Also, does it have multiplayer?

Your best bet, if you absolutely must play this game, is to Google search for the Genesis Rom. Use Kega or Gens to emulate it and your all set. As to legally buying, I'm afraid your 10+ years too late. I have yet to see these titles (sc & sc2) offered any where with a reasonable price. Amazon or Ebay if your in to highway robbery. But who am I to question the price of a GOOD game.

I'm not too clear on the legal aspects of  "abandonware" but

http://www.abandonia.com/games/143/StarControl1

You're gonna need "dosbox" to play it, I believe.

Yeah, Abandonia isn't always....entirely legal, but I guess it's my best bet unless I feel like paying some crazy amount on Ebay. Thanks!

*Rises from his Grave*

I think someone should try to pull an UQM on Star Control 1, But add some stuff into it aswell (for example, go into the Skirmishes in the recent Star Control history, and MAYBE, just MAYBE, refine and use the element that was one of the only saving graces of SCn3).

Man, my necro skills seem to be insane. A bit of splash necro there.

About the SC1 remake all I have to say is *sob*. I've wanted this for so long. One day... one day! I swear I'm going to do it. I'm going to program it. I'm going to make this dream a reality. It may have to wait for retirement, but it will happen!

PS, Abandonia, my home away from UQM.

I'd be willing to help with it! But the sooner we get a chance to do something like that, the better!

Alas, that would be much easier done if your physical location we're of a much closer proximity. I have come to the conclusion that long term relationsihps like this never work out. But, hey, if you ever get a reason to move to Colorado, (USA) and if you program, an if we meet in the summer (I'm a teacher and so I have summer's free) maybe we can make a date of it.

SC1 was a good game. It's not the same caliber as SC2, obviously, but what is? I have fond memories of it, partly because it was one of the very first computer games I ever had.

I would really like to see something similar to SC1's strategic mode, only with SC2 ships. There could be options for both preset story scenarios a la SC1 and freeform team choosing like in super melee. I tried to program it a few years ago to possibly add as an extension to UQM, but didn't get very far before I realized I was in way over my head - I'm not really a very good programmer, especially with C.

There's an Amiga version aswell. It was my first contact with the SC universe, but I never got to play the game much.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/star-control/screenshots

MobyGames says it was available for:
    * Amiga
    * Amstrad CPC
    * Commodore 64
    * DOS
    * Genesis
    * ZX Spectrum

Only the DOS, Amiga, and Genesis versions were created by Toys for Bob.

Yeah, as it turns out the other versions were actually prequals, Volume III if you will (SC1 & 2 were volumes 4 and 5 of the Ur-Quan conflict respectivly).

This is, of course, a joke and not official in any way. But check out the link. Funny stuff:
Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict Volume III.

That was a highly amusing read. I think the subtitle should be "Desperately attempting to justify the nonsensical." Grin
