BURVIXESE BOWL – April SuperMelee Knockout Tournament
« on: April 23, 2007, 12:08:28 am »

Now here’s a tournament to salivate over – the Burvixese Bowl! Will you triumph and be showered in glory from your illustrious UQM peers? Or will you go the way of the Burvixese? Thankfully if you get squished in the first round you’re put out of your misery and don’t have to partake in another beating.

Date: 28 April 2007
Time: Saturday from 4pm EST
Place: #uqm-arena at irc://chat.freenode.net

{The Kohr-Ah Cup (Spring League) will take a break for this tournament}

Be here for this third ever online Star Control Super-melee knockout tournament!

Time where you live
Sun 6 am Sydney
Sun 8 am Otorohanga
Sat 1 pm Los Angeles
Sat 4 pm New York
Sat 9 pm London
Sat 10 pm Paris
Sat 11 pm Helsinki

Tournament structure
Basic Knockout tournament (just like the tennis).
Seedings based partly order of entry but mostly on your NetPlay tournament record.

Provisional Schedule (all EST)
16.00 Check-in/Register
16.20 Cut-off for entry
16.30 Round of 16 begins
17.15 Quarterfinals
18.00 Semifinals
18.45 Final - Burvixese Bowl

Game rules
Maximum 200 pts per fleet
Maximum one of each ship type per fleet (no duplicates)
Maximum 40 minutes per melee - Timed out games result in both players losing and exiting the tournament (an effort to nullify boring stalemates)
You must have your team set up before melee - this prevents you adjusting your line-up to counter your opponent’s team!

Of course everyone is encouraged to enter no matter how good or experienced you are (or not). The more the better. We don’t want the tournaments to be restricted to the superstars of NetPlay.

I hope to see you there! Nice people who don't complain/make excuses when they lose are especially encouraged

I wonder why you don't do an amateur-only tournament - no Elvish, Tiberian, Angus etc. - ?

The numbers are small enough as it is without excluding people

As much as I like to play Melee, I'm inclined to agree here. UQM is a great game and I don't want to discourage anyone from playing because I've had the advantage of playing for what seems like forever.

I'll continue to participate in the Khor-Ah Cup, but I think I'll bow out of this one. Good luck all!

Or modify the rounds so that one division has the 'big guns' and the other division has the amateurs. At least that way no one will get smoked first round.

Yes, modify the rounds so that the amateurs and the veterans fight separately, then the amateur winner and the veteran winner face each other, the amateur having a handicap such as a higher point limit.

Sadly it is my birthday and I cannot attend.  From what people are saying, perhaps rankings from previous tournaments and the Kohr-ah cup can be used to form a light handicapping (in the form of a reduced fleet size).

I would like to take part in this, I've managed to get my UQM working onlined and I do enoy it, although I reeeaally do not like the issues with delay. I'm an amateur really, but I'd give it my all Cheesy. From England, so I fit the London timescale.

Ced,

I may try to make this one, assuming I'm not enjoying some fine brew, or being a busybody doing something else.  Perhaps as more people play frequently, you can develop a handicap in the form of more/less points, or ship limiting/enforcing  or something.  I think adding various caveats, like "no 30pts this tourney" would also force the learning curve a bit.

I definately want to participate in this. I've been playing UQM for a while, been beating the computer quite often, though I think i'd like to break out into the competitive battle scene and show off my skills with a VUX Intruder.  Grin

Oh, I don't mind if I win or lose, i'm just here for the experience of it all. I just hope none of my opponents get too cocky.

I wonder if anyone wants to have a practice battle with me..

I'm sure they would, you should just drop into #uqm-arena every now and then - there's usually someone there.
