Accomodating newer players in tournaments

This thread is for you to help me address the issue of player skill imbalance in the Netplay melee leagues and knockout tournaments that are run.

Whether you know it or not there is a calendar that I am loosely following that consists of monthly Knockout tournaments and quarterly leagues.

Numbers have been low but there have been a core bunch of people that have made the whole thing very worth while.

So far the tournaments have attracted the following:
Chenjesu Challenge Summer league   6
Pkunk Plate Feb KO                          4 (yes 4)
Utwig Urn March KO                          9
Kohr-Ah Cup Spring League               8

Since the game itself is 14 years old the experience level of those participating is disparate. And since these competitions are ‘open’ there have been frightful beatings (mostly at the hands of two culprits – you know who you are). As fun as this is for the players dishing it out, it’s not so fun if it’s your first go in playing a tournament and you are on the receiving end.

So even though numbers are still barely above minimum, maybe its time to look at structuring these competitions in a way that incorporates different experience levels.

Having said that I think the basic structure of the tournaments works pretty well and I don’t intend to move away from leagues and KO tournaments, or the time/day in which I run them.

So what are some options?

KO tournaments could be elongated in a way that puts the 2 best players straight into the semi-finals, shielding less experienced players from them until they have earned the right to play them. In much the same way that European FA cups work, the premier sides enter the KO tournament at a much later stage leaving smaller clubs to battle it out earlier.

As for the league I see two options
1)   Break it into two divisions
2)   Have a preliminary section where top few qualifiers get to partake in main event.

I think the best tournament table is what is used in football (that is soccer for you Americans).

There are groups of 4 teams (players in this case) and inside the groups, everybody plays against everybody. After the group phase, the best two in each group advance to the knock out phase.

The groups could and should be set up by known skill. Here is an example of how it can be done:

Every participant is given a skill level between 1 and 4, and each group has one player of each skill level.

This system works the best when there are lots of players. It requires a minimum of 8 players to be reasonable. If there are less than 8 players, it doesn't matter so much what 'tournament mode' to use.

A n00b tournament would be nice if enough newbies would ever show up. We could just bar the following players from participating at all (in no real order):

Tiberian
Cedric
Angus
Shiver
Squisher
Elvish_Pillager
Stara

...And maybe a few others that I don't remember off the top of my head. The winner of the n00b tourny could go up against a veteran, just to see how they stack up.

Yes, to be considred but is dependent on how many show up. It would probably be based on something concrete like wins accumulated in competitive play. Since and Squisherxxx have not played yet they would be exempt.

No, wrong. Do NOT put Squisher against a bunch of amateurs just because you aren't familiar with him.

Its just one tourny, and Cedric has em every month. So while Squisher will likely smoke the amateurs this time around, the next time he'll be catagorized properly.

You should be doing what's best for the melee community if you're going to be in charge of these things. In particular, it would be nice if you'd more clearly post the results of each tournament. Maybe give a little background on what was most decisive in the final match. I'm not even sure who won the Kohr-Ah Cup (Is it even over?) because you've said nothing about it.

Try playing Squisher yourself if you need concrete evidence that he's not an amateur.

When this competitive stuff gets a bit of momentum I might be able to build a proper home for it. Until then, it's these threads unfortunately.

Its not over yet - there are 11 regular season games to go in total  - plus semis and a final.  You have played 5 games and have 2 to play. I always do a brief summary of the weekend's results, and I always rave about the winner.

Officially we are having a KO tournament tomorow instead, but I'm hoping to get some league games out of the way anyway this weekend. Hopefully you can be here for either.
