Good Captain / Ship Names
« on: January 05, 2003, 10:29:18 am »

Just thought I'd ask what people usually use to name their ships / captains.  I post under "Captain Smith" because that's almost always what I use there...I use "Rodgers" sometimes, old mainstream sci-fi tv watchers will know why on that one.

As far as ship names go, I usually end up using something out of Star Trek like "Excelsior" or "Defiant".

Haven't thought of anything really clever yet...

What do people here generally use?

Currently I'm captain Monk of the ship Nadsmash (Nadsmasher didn't fit).

My fiancee is Zaya with the flagship Estro (in counter-point to my ship).

No particular captain's name, but my ship is always called the 'Precursor'. Tongue

On this current game it's Captain Solo flying the Falcon... I had a human cruiser captain named Solo too, but, uh, he was... eliminated. *evil laugh*

Fanfic has ruined me; I'm almost always Paul Ford of the Vindicator. Smiley

I used to use Precursor a lot too.

This question has been bothering me even before I have gotten the program compiled... The first time I played, with a friend, we were Captain(s?) Kirk of the Enterprise (IIRC, we had to abbreviate). Kind of unoriginal. Second time, I was Captain Nedar of the Executor (one of the officers that vader offed in the Empire Strikes Back - and the super star destroyer. Fitting, because both ships ram the biggest warship around, but not exactly for the same reason).

This time... who knows?
I may take one of the character/ship combos from Niven's Known Space...

***Warning: Intense Star Wars' Geek's Post Below***

The guy in Empire Strikes Back is named Captain Needa, and he was the captain of the Star Destroyer Avenger, the one that lost the Millenium Falcon... Vader chokes him for it.

When my friend and I played back in 94, we named our ship the Phoenix.  Not only was it symbolic of rebirth after destruction, but we just loved the sound of the name.  It seems fitting that the ship ended up going out in a blaze of glory.

There are TWO captains killed by Vader, actually. One is done from one ship to another while they're on communication link - the other is in person.
But I don't remember the names.

Captain Needa is the one done via the communication screen, Admiral Ozzel is the one he kills in person. I told ya I was a dork.  Grin

My captain's name changed from game to game, but I always named the ship the "Salvation".  It just seemed symbolically appropriate.

I chose Kirk of the default name Vindicator, but I wish I had chosen Archer...
