3DO plot fixes?

I think that the UQM project is awesome, but am I the only one who is seriously bothered by the fact that the 3DO version of Star Control 2 leaves out the dialogue by the Melnorme mentioning the MetaChron (which, as well as being really cool, is also vital to realizing that one is under a time limit) and the Mycon mentioning the location of their homeworld.  This second dialogue is, in fact, vital to the plot... without it, the only way to finish the game is through more or less random exploration in the Mycon sector, which is something that I felt the PC original avoided with great care (since it always offered you clues on where you could find what... as long as you talked often with the aliens).

I feel it would be really good to include an option in UQM to enable at least these two dialogues.  Now I realize there's no 3DO speech recorded for them... but that really isn't an issue.  Just display it as text (and if it's impossible for the engine to display dialogue without playing a sound at the same time, then record some silence for it and play that).

That way, players could choose if they want consistency (ie, recorded speech at all times) or if they prefer a more streamlined plot (without random exploring required).

Now, I know that the FAQ/forums let people know all this, but I feel a FAQ on an outside website shouldn't be REQUIRED reading, really.

So, what do people think?  Would it be lots of work to implement this (even if it's as a mod)?  Is it feasible?  Does anyone else think it would be good idea?  And would anyone here have the programming skills to make it happen?

No you're not the only one. There are one or two lenghy  threads devoted to this topic - i am too lazy to find them right now. Many people believe that the missing dialogue should be added to the UQM project - this requires a suitable quality of voice acting additions. The Core team may implement the missing bits but they want dialogue thats fits in seamlessly with the rest of the game - that means the highest quality sound files. Having said that, one core team member has suggested that they may consider text only for some critical parts in 0.7.0 (the next version). I share your frustrations but also trust that this is a work in progress and that 1.0 will be just super.

Well, it's good to hear that it's being considered.

I guess I just wish it were already available in the current version (regardless of if it were with voice acting or without) - I wouldn't care about the 'no voice' inconsistency as long as I have my MetaChron/Mycon Homeworld...
