my sc1 remake
« on: May 15, 2007, 02:07:44 am »

I'm not sure how far I'll get into this but it's got all the star control solar systems.

here's some shots.  I'm working on dialog next.

I've only modeled 4 of the 12 ships I want to so if anyone has some low poly models let me know.

In what fashion is this an SC1 remake?

So far it's more of a SC2 prequel than a SC1 remake.  I'm looking to make it more of a story driven game.  I'm not aiming for super visually stunning or wicked awesome top down dog fights (though I haven't gotten to that at all).   I want to keep it simple and have it be a beautiful tribute that reminds me of the good times I had playing sc as a kid.

So, how will it actually function? Like SC1? Like SC2? Like something different?

well
dialog ->SC2 style.  I want a beautiful story with cool dialog.  I'd like to follow the androsynth story arc.  I've got a bunch of ideas, and there's some aliens I'd like to explore that were wiped out pre sc2.  As well as the alternate universe.

universe & planet system exploration ->SC2.  Definately more precurser coolness. (I've actually finished a good chunk of this)

strategy -> like SC1, with mines and colonies.  Except slightly different.  I want a simple yet fun solar system battle game.  I'm not sure if I'm going turn based or real time yet.  Turn based might be simpler and that may be what I need to go for.

combat -> only sc1 ships (even doing that many is a huge undertaking).  But I'd envisioned fleets of ships instead of just 1 at a time.  Depending on how long it takes me to do the rest this could become quite simple.

no planetary lander. no flag ship.  hyperspace travel simplified.

As you can see, I'm using opengl, sdl, sdl mixer, precursers music, the map generated by the star control universe, mostly ripped images for the alien dialog.  I'm afraid I've only gotten part way into it.

I'm not sure how it will turn out, but it's a labour of love and I'll keep you all posted.

Are you looking for anyone to assist you with stuff?

Art, dialogue, music, programming, etc?

I could use a hand with some stuff.

I'm using music from the um remix ogg files.  But I am going to put in a few more aliens.  I want the gg and a couple now extinct races.

I've only completed  4 of the ship models but that still leaves at least 6 more.

my update is that I've completed the planet orbiting segment of the game.  I'll post a screen shot when I get a chance.

So if anyone likes making 3d models or music just let me know.  I'll only need a few... I don't think the world needs another never ending video game project.

By the way, be sure to change the color of the planets' orbits - that dark gray is almost invisible.

Ya, I know old thread.  But I'm still working.  Perhaps what might be most interesting to people is the models.

I've made it into a project on source forge.  Anyone interested in getting any models can download them here.

http://starcon1-5.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/starcon1-5/

I'm making the models simple and low poly in wings 3d (free app for anyone who wants it).  They are in obj format so any app can read them.  They're free to use in your games/projects/ whatever.

I'll keep you all updated.

This is cool... I was able to open and view all the models. Great work in low poly!
The Androsyn has only 1000 faces. o_O not bad at all! If it would help.... I'm working on models as well, and could easily provide you with low poly versions. Since modeling takes time to do, I know I could use more help.

Anyway looking good.  Grin

That would be very awesome!

The thing about low poly models is they don't take too long to do, but because I'm trying to do a lot it will take some time.

As you can see I did three ships, and I've got a few more to do to complete all the sc1 ships.

Also the ones I have done aren't super awesome, so if anyone can redo them better I'd be very happy.

If you want to contribute models you can either email them to me or I can add you to the sourceforge project.

OK. Here is a dir I set up for the completed Low-poly models...
Get them now because the link will not last forever...
Watch this folder for the next few days as I will be adding new models often.
ModelBucket

Will you be zooming in to the ships a lot? I'm trying to figure out what kind of detail will best fit your needs. My target has been between 1000 & 2500 polygons. Let me know if that number should be somthing else.

Excellent.  Those look really nice!  Good job.

For me I'm trying to make the models as small as 30 pixels across, and as large as 120 pixels.  I especially liked the syreen.  Is it alright for me to add you to my source forge project?  Then you can just check stuff in there.  You see people asking for models all the time.  Well this will be good because now the models will be up there for anyone who wants to have access.  I also like your work.

Another good thing about this type of project is that if you come out with a better/updated model then you can just update the existing one in the project quite easily.  As soon as you update then it people will see the most up to date version.

Can I add those models to the project for now?  I might have to do some resizing, I noticed the scales on each model are quite different.

Yes to all...  Sorry about the clumsy scale.
