Star Control 3 with fluid dynamics? HELL YES
« on: May 06, 2007, 03:29:53 pm »

http://www.plasmapong.com/

One of the craziest and most beautiful little games I've ever seen, using fluid dynamics in a 2d environment, perfect for a Star Control type game.

Check out when you charge up the paddles and make the explosions, the swirling plasma vortex sweeping aside everything, kind of reminds me of the Kor-Ah flamey thing.

Imagine a Shofixiti glory device using similar physics, it'd be glorious, flames and plasma shockwaves immolating and crashing into an enemy ship, washing it away on scorching currents.

Every moment I played this game it reminded me that 2d games can still be beautiful. With stuff like this possible in real-time: Star Control 3 could be one of the best looking games out (when its out) despite being limited to 2d.

Maybe it was because I had to reduce certain parameters to make the framerate acceptable, but the plasma flows never really built up speed even if I kept pumping them, and the ball would quickly slow to the speed of the plasma, so it was trivially easy to defend against. I only let it by twice, when I was distracted playing with the plasma (and when the conductor checked my ticket). And that 'super-charge' is really underwhelming. At least it is on level 1 when the ball isn't so strongly affected by the plasma.

Any tips for getting the ball by your opponent?

The obvious application to me in a SC game would be in the hyperspace travel in story mode.  I think you could make it look *real* trippy this way...

This reminds me of a StarTrek:Voyager "making of" I saw. Some sfx dude was talking about how they did the scene with the ship pushing through the nebula in the opening. There seem to have been some recent progress when it comes to realtime fluid dynamics in games and it looks like we're gonna see some cool implementations soon. Maybe the code has been there all along, it's just processors catching up.

Some more fluid mechanics:

Odyssey - Winds of Athena

This one has you guiding a fleet of ships by (yes, you guessed it) tinkering with the sea currents.

Now that I've played it a few times I've got to say I'm... definately inspired, but I'm not sure it's the right choice for a Star Control game. There are so many things to consider. I think an clever programmer would do well to demo out like a bare bones melee in this sort of thing first.

Is there a clever programmer in the house?
