Better than vanilla? Let's see: sawdust, freshly baked bread, Swiss strawberries, your significant other's perfume (that's very subjective, I know), coffee (mentioned above) just to name a few.

Alright, I wanted this to be civil but half the posts are trolling me so I'm going after the most agitating responses now.
sawdust Yuck. Come on, really?
coffee Coffee sucks. If you need caffeine to stay awake it's because your heart stopped beating 5 years ago. Congrats on joining the ranks of the undead.
perfume Perfume is overrated because everyone attaches its scent to the person they're sleeping with. ANYTHING that gets attached to someone you're sleeping with is going to have its perceived value inflated beyond belief.
roses Cliched. I'm sure there are better smelling flowers but I'm not a floral person so I can't really say anything for sure.

Is it just me or are you just getting increasingly vulgar Shiver? No, I just said I'm losing my patience with a topic that was supposed to be semi-serious. The best way to show me up in this topic would probably be to track down a aforementioned "floral person" because there's bound to be a flower that just kills everything else mentioned in here.
The burning wood suggestion isn't too bad, it's just that most types of wood really don't give off the kind of smell you guys are talking about.

I feel really ... spiritual.. or "at ease" when I smell certain kinds of model clay (which I grew up spending tons of time building stuff with). Different brands evoke a different state of mind.
Certain kinds of packaging can do the same, like a freshly opened lego kit/manual.
As for food, I sniff empty chocolate wrappings sometimes and reminiscence the time... 4 minutes ago... when I so joyfully enjoyed the chocolate bar itself.
Empty pizzaboxes smell nice too. And if you throw them up in the air you can punch a hole in them with your knuckle, or fail, which hurts almost as much as trying to break a wooden pencil between your fingers in 7th grade.
