Netplay practice.
« on: June 29, 2007, 12:11:56 am »

Now, before I actually say this, it's possible to connect to someone if the host computer is named something other than their IP address, correct?

If so, I would like to inform other people that are interested in netplay that I will most likely be on central time 3:00 PM - 9:00 PM, and that my host name is Yungblud.

Other people who would like to list their host names can do so here as well.

I suspect your hostname is your Windows hostname, which is only usable within a local Windows network.
Over the internet a hostname is only useful in combination with a domain name in which it is registered.
But whether or not your machine has a publicly accessible hostname or not, it will have an ip number.
These ip numbers are what is used anyhow; the ip number for a hostname is looked up before connecting.

I've listed a lot of information regarding netplay in UQM, starting with some network basics on this page.

What is the problem with netplay for you?

Well, I don't really have a problem with Netpaly, except for the fact that I can never find anyone to play with. The biggest part of this problem is that I don't have IRC, but in spite of that, I can't post my IP address here because I don't have a static IP.

also, quick question, is a net delay lower than 4 better or worse for low-end computers?

You asked this already, and it's already been answered. You want to play with the lowest net delay your computer will let you get away with and only raise it if the setting you're trying causes horrible jitters in the game.

There's a web IRC client on http://uqm.stack.nl/irc/.

You'll want the lowest net delay that the connection to your opponent can handle. The performance of your computer is irrelevant (as long as it's fast enough to play UQM).
For more information, see the page I linked to in my previous posting.

Not having a static ip number is not a problem; you may just have to give your opponent a different ip number each time. Or you just connect to them.
Eventually, we hope to have a lobby, and all this will be much simpler. But don't hold your breath.
