Spherical gameplay on Stardust HD
« on: July 09, 2007, 06:03:37 pm »

It's long been an opinion of mine that melee would be awesome on a spherical map, at some fixed orbital distance around the planet being played on. Wanna see what it could look like? i ran into this video while doing some random surfing. Makes me want to get my amiga emulator up and running to see what the original looked like.

That took me to a video of someone demonstrating a Lego Star Wars 2 glitch, was that what you meant to put up?

Ditto. That's what I saw too.

Strictly speaking isn't melee already on a 'spherical' surface since it wraps around?

No. The melee arena is topologically equivalent to a torus, not a sphere.

Sorry about that. The link's been fixed.

And yes, the way melee wrap is currently handled is what us math buffs call toroid mapping. It's not what it would be like to play on a sphere at all. Rather the way it is, wrapping top to bottom and left to right, is like wrapping on a donut. A very fat and squat donut.
