UQM Translation... or new speech :-)
« on: January 08, 2003, 02:14:50 am »

Hi...

I was wondering... since this is an open source project, is there any way I or someone could contribute by translating the game to another language ?

Or... even better... is there a way to change the Speech of the game ? (try to make some races sound a little more...uh... real !?).

i'm sure your definition of the term 'real' differs greatly from most people. (:

there's nothing to stop you from recording the spoken dialogue in your own voices or language, as the case may be.  they are all in a .ogg format and easily replaceable by files of the same name.

i don't believe that it will be part of the scope of this project, however, so i wouldn't count on it being part of the final release. (:

recoding everything, remixing the music, and cleaning up the sound effects is practically a full time project anyway. *grin*  the fact that it's open source pretty well means you can do what you like.

Love that open source.  I'm planning on replacing a few of the audio bits myself.....maybe change the Syreen to sound like a four hundred pound prison inmate or something.  And then laaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuugh  Roll Eyes

Or at least, can you tell me how can I convert them ?

Thanks a lot...

By the Way... Can I also change the dialogs ?? Where can I find the files ?

Multiple punctuation marks are a sure sign of a diseased mind, you know...

Anyway, .ogg files are compressed audio, like MP3 files.  You can convert .wav files to .ogg using the oggenc program, which is part of vorbis-tools.  I don't know if other programs can create .ogg files, although I heard lame had an ogg-producing mode.

The dialog text is in the comm directory of the content stuff, under a .txt extension; eg, content/comm/yehat/yehat.txt.

The Search link at the top of every page is your friend.  Look here for an old discussion on creating OGG files.  It should also answer your question as to where to find the subtitles.

You forgot the "Dweeb! punk! nerd! jerk!" drone of energy regeneration, Pkunk-style.

I am working on a translation into German right now - but that project takes more time than I can spare at the moment.
Progress might be slow, but steady...
I'll keep the original voices though, and "just" subtitle the whole game's conversation.

So, if you translated the game into german, what insults would the Pkunk say...?  "Dumkopf!  Wunderbar!  Herr Fuhrer!"  Sorry, ignore the last one.

GM do you have a voice synthesizer program? like the device the use in movies when they kidnap the President's son and ask for ransom?

I always wanted one of those Wink

Sorry, Censored, I  w a s  planning on kidnapping the President's dog though - but at the moment I feel it inappropriate to put more stress onto the German-U.S. relationsship!
But that synthesizer thing would be kinda cool. Right now I'm only giving the game subtitles - dubbind it would cause way too much work for me at the moment. But, you never know!

As for you, Daniel, the Pkunks energy regeneration only takes place in melee - since there is no written text, I think I'll just let'em keep their English insults.
But yes, except for your last try, this is what would happen:
Baby - Baby
Dodo - Dronte (if that dead bird is meant by Dodo)
Fool - Narr
Idiot - Idiot
Jerk - Depp
Loser - Versager
Moron - Schwachkopf
Nerd - Streber
Nitwit - Nichtswisser
Stupid - Dummkopf
Twit - Trottel
Wimp - Weichei
Worm - Wurm

Most of the insults have different translations, but this is what comes closest to the original - just don't use'em too much in public...
