Try getting as much info from Commander Hayes, he might have some interesting spots to look for. Also, have you been on Pluto?

The game is very open ended. You can do things in your own time, as long as you don't doodle around for too long. The entire point of an adventure game like this is exploring on your own, tracking down different races, getting clues and solving mysteries. If you are challenged for things to do while still in the solar system, then you need to rethink your approach. The game won't kill you if you visit systems in the wrong order, only if you waste too much time cruising around without a set goal. There is a whole universe out there! Go explore it! Talk to people! Find stuff! And most importantly, have fun!

If this open-endedness gives you too much of a headache, there are several guides floating around the internet for the game. For instance, the Ultronomicon has a page of non-spoiler tips. If you want more straightforward help, any of these walkthroughs should probably do.
