RE: randomly unresponsive keys
« on: July 21, 2007, 03:43:09 pm »

After doing a search for this issue, I haven't found a thread that actually said anything about it so I'm starting one now.

My problem is this:  All keys seem to be randomly unresponsive for some reason.  Like if I'm using the lander on a planet, I get my arse handed to me by the environment because I can't smoothly turn in any direction.  I wind up having the lander make extremely sharp turns (as though it could only move in four directions), and hitting the ESC key sometimes has to be done several times before I leave the surface, sometimes resulting in destruction.

I USED to have version 0.3 and it worked fine, but I wanted to get the new version out of curiosity, and so far I'm regretting it (I also haven't played it in quite a long time so I wanted to start over and see how far I'd get).  I just can't see myself playing it if this is an issue.

And this issue is for the whole game, including the start menu.  I'll hit an arrow key to go down one selection, and sometimes I have to hit the key twice to get it to move.

Running this on a 750mhz machine, 256megs RAM, fairly quick vid card..., so really, it should run fine.

Any idea what's causing this?

Sounds like bug 742. What sort of keyboard are you using? What operating system? Do other games work or do they have similar problems? How does the keyboard test supplied with UQM work?

This machine runs Win98... I haven't tried it on my Win2k machine though I suppose that could be an option at this point.

It's actually an old keyboard, but like I said, this issue only surfaced in version 0.6 (in 0.3, everything ran smoothly).

To say what the keyboard is, well, it's a 102-key format (actually it has more than that, but it's standard).  Ergonomic type.

I suppose I could go and fire up the other PC and see how it runs there... never thought of that.  lol.

EDIT:  I will try a different keyboard to see if that helps...

I've seen problems with newer versions of SDL under Win98; 2K and XP are better tested. I expect UQM will work on your Win2K box.

In any case, it would help a lot to get the results of the UQM keyboard test (you should find it buried in the Start menu, under Games/The Ur-Quan Masters); this would help determine where the problem lies. If the keyboard test also reacts slowly, SDL or Windows is probably the culprit. If not, it may be a problem with UQM itself.

It's running spectacularily well on my Win2k machine, so I'll consider this matter "solved."

I was shying away from putting it on this machine since I have a M-Audio sound card on it, and wasn't sure if there would be any audio in the game (since it's not a mainstream end-user sound card often associated with gaming).  Turns out it is fully compatible with the game.
