I used two MP3 files from the SC2, 3DO version that I obtained at the Star Control Now and Forever site. One being a remix by "Chrispy". Do I need permission to use these? I kinda want to find somthing different anyway as the MP3's are alot bigger than I'd like ideally, but was wondering about the leagality of using that music for possible future projects.
The UQM content is now under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5, so you essentially have permission to use the UQM music in your game as long as you license your game the same way, don't make any money from it and ensure that you acknowledge the composer (read the legal stuff for details).
Unofficial remixes are trickier to sort out as they seldom have a specified license (like this one); if Chrispy didn't have permission for his remix before the UQM content relicensing, he would only have permission to release it now under the same license, allowing you to use it the same way. Unfortunately, you don't know that.
I was eventually going to ask about this in regards to my fan animation work and where I can get music. I plan to make a version of the ending animation and a prequel depicting the fall of the alliance, and the batle at delta gorno.
