The spathi imply that someone must have put the evil ones on their homeworld... Who did it?

'Twas the Umgah, no?

P.S. I'll be back in one year.

My guess is that the Umgah created them specifically for the purpose of terrorizing the Spathi.  Otherwise it seems like it would be a little difficult to find something that found Spathi flesh delicious, and could live off other things on Spathiwa, unless we're going with No Biochemical Barriers here.

The Umgah played a prank on the Spathi, impersonating the Ultimate Evil. The Spathi panicked and many Spathi died.

Actually, not quite. That was after the Evil Ones, and it wasn't the Ultimate Evil, but other three similar characters, see here.

As for the thread's subject - why wouldn't the Umgah have known Spathi back then? They're fairly close to each other anyway.

The evil ones were what made the Spathi develop technology so quickly, so the Umgah must have known where the Spathi homeworld was before they were even in the bronze age maybe.

Seems likely. The Umgah are intelligent and have probably known interstellar travel for a long time. Also, a race such as the Spathi would be a great discovery for the Umgah: Paranoid and continually scared, and unlikely to retaliate, the Spathi are pretty much the perfect target of pranks and practical jokes. The Umgah seem to have a general history of playing tricks on the Spathi, including convincing them that they were under attack by The Grand Master Planet Eaters, Jud the Vug and Killmaster 18, and an incident where they clogged the life support systems of an entire fleet of Eluders with a stench agent. They've probably done many other things to the Spathi even before they became a technological species -- and it seems pretty likely that the Evil Ones are in fact an Umgah genetic creation.

This, of course, means that the Umgah pretty much accidentally uplifted the Spathi -- although I'm sure the Spathi are not exactly grateful for that.

The Arilou also say that their level of biotechnology surpasses their own, so I think that should say something.. so they have a history of knowledge, but probably don't want to implement it fully if you know what I mean, at least until they were being geared for war by the Ur-Quan from a peaceful species to one full of murderous pranksters.

Actually, the Ur-Quan were holding them back from some of the more murderous pranks:

Quote
Har! Har! Har! Freedom very good thing!
It so much easier to make good jokes without boring old Ur-Quan slave laws!
We wanting to pull a real good one on those stupid nosers from Draconis for long time
but since they battle thralls too, we not allowed do even small pranks on them
like, say... dropping planetoid in their ocean.
Big waves! Big waves! Har! Har! Har!

I agree with those who say the Umgah.  It's their thing to play cruel practical jokes on other species, and the Spathi do make good targets due to their cowardice.  Though if they could overcome their cowardice, the Spathi would be more than a match for the Umgah, in battle.  Eluders are way better than Drones.
