Bizarre Forum Problem
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:48:55 am »

The board has been extremely slow for me in the last couple of days. This is what happens:

- I request a page.
- Nothing happens for 20-25 seconds.
- The page starts loading normally.
- After a few seconds it stops, and again nothing happens for 20-25 seconds.
- Etc.

I'm pretty amazed nobody else has had a problem. The board is usually very fast for me, and other sites work fine.

Any idea what's going on? Undecided

Unlike most sites, uqm.stack.nl supports both IPv4 and IPv6. If you have configured your Windows to use IPv6 but you don't actually have an IPv6-capable connection, you can get problems like this.

I've never configured anything related to IPv6, and I haven't touched the network settings in ages. Undecided

It seems to be back to normal now. Cheesy

So you can stop worrying, everyone.

...and it's back. Sad

I have this same problem on my Linux box, but only when I use the Opera web browser. The problem occures about 80% of the time.

Does it happen for every page? Or just when viewing threads? It's possible that the browser stalls on one of the avatars that are loaded from some other place. That's the only circumstance where I have ever gotten similar effects here, and I'm running Opera on Linux too.

I've been having a similar problem on IE 6 here at work. For a long time I just assumed that it was IE being stupid, because I never had a problem with Firefox at home, but maybe it's a bit more widespread than that.

The problem pops up only in threads, and seemingly only in certain ones (The "Star Control 3 and Doogs" thread is currently the most noticable troublemaker for me, as an example). I've tried to get an idea if someone's avatar or sig is stalling it out like you said, but I haven't seen anyone to link threads that have stalled that hasn't popped up with no trouble in threads that act normally.

Once I open up a page that stalls, it generally loads the title bar and then starts to labor. It really does stall the entire browser, too; even if I try to stop loading the page, I can't get it to do anything else until I close it out and restart it. It also never catches up in any kind of reasonable (or even unreasonable) time; I've left it over an hour lunchbreak to try to fully load a page, and it never made any additional progress.

I hope that helps a little, rather than just adding to the pile.

If the problem is an avatar, then the problem may only occur the first time the page is loaded (as the image may be cached). You wouldn't see any problems with other threads if you visit them after you have already visited an offending thread.

If your browser doesn't continue after a while, then you don't have the same problem as the OP. If you can't get MSIE to do anything after you've cancelled the load, then there's a bug in IE, besides any other problems that might exist.

I also had problems with IE but with Firefox there hasn't been any on this site, so far.

It happens with every page, even http://uqm.stack.nl/.

I use Opera on Windows, but it happens in IE as well. And it happens on two different PCs. Undecided

Could you try another IPv6-capable site? Like http://www.kame.net/. Do you have any problems there?

In a bizarre twist, this was the very next thread to suffer the glitch for me. However, the fact that I'm posting here means that I've found a "workaround" of sorts, at least for the IE problem. Instead of opening the thread normally, I simply right-clicked the link and opened it in a new window. For some inexplicable reason it worked; no idea why I didn't bother trying that before.

EDIT: Actually, even more oddly, I can now access this thread normally. No idea why; maybe you're right about the caching thing, but again, everyone who has posted here, I've seen posts from with no trouble elsewhere.

KAME works fine. The delay is now down to about 6 seconds, which is quite bearable, but I bet it'll change again in my next visit. Undecided

Happy Edit: The problem's been gone for about a week now! \o/

And so, after quite a while, the problem returns to hassle me. I've been having this thing for a couple of days now. Happens on the Ultronomicon too, but that's not very surprising. Happens with other browsers too. Different PC now. KAME works fine. Woe is me.

Just thought I might share.

Could anyone else not access the forum this afternoon?

(This topic seemed the most logical to post in...this didn't seem to warrant its own topic.)
