Savegames / running off USB stick
« on: November 04, 2007, 10:25:29 am »

Fist of all, let me say that UQM is fantastic!

However, I find it very inconvenient that UQM stores save game data in the "Application Data" folder.

I have tried to run UQM off a USB stick so that I could play on different computers. I couldnt do this because there is no way to specify an alternate path for savegames.

Why not just store the save game data in a subfolder inside
the game program folder?

Please consider changing this.

Nonsense. RTFM. You want the -C option.

There are several good reasons for doing things this way, mostly related to multi-user systems, security and separation of programs and user data:
  • Each user can have his own settings and save games for UQM.
  • Users don't need write access to the UQM installation directory, just their own part of "Documents and Settings". Granting this access is problematic under e.g. XP Home for non-Admin accounts.
  • Save games roam with user profiles, which is practical if you have user profiles shared between different machines or transfer user profiles to preserve settings.
  • Using the Application Data folder follows Microsoft's recommendations, so it's less likely to break under future versions of Windows (or generate tons of security prompts on Vista).
And, as noted, you can easily change this behaviour.

Not likely, due to reasons explained above.

OK! The "--configdir" option. I totally overlooked that "config data" also means to include "save games". Sorry.

You might want to hint at this option in the "Save Games" section of the manual.

Thanks & take it easy
