Need Gas... >.>
« on: December 08, 2007, 05:29:56 am »

Okay so I'm exploring deep space for the first time in the game and got caught out of gas. Figuring I would just use the cheap way of the saved game editor I load that up and it keeps saying the program has generated errors and will be closed by windows.  So that's out of the question.

I figure I could use a hex editor but I don't know how to or where to even find it. I just want fuel >.<

Anyone have any suggestions?

edit: Okay the Melborne fix me up, didn't know that.
Anywho, how would I use a hex editor?

Just some friendly advise: always bring more fuel than you think you need. At least until you really know what you're doing. Landing on planets can burn up a lot of fuel and leave you stuck on a nasty part of the map!

Don't know about hex editing, though.

Cheat engine is an easy one to use. search for unknown value, use a little fuel, search for lowered values, buy some fuel, search for increased, so on and so forth. should narrow it down eventually.  Save the CE profile, so its easy to get next time. reload your stuck save, freeze the value and change it to whatever ytou want. its fun to mess around with different things, but sometimes you can cause some really messed up glitches.
good luck Smiley

The fuel is stored at addresses C and D.. Set both of these to FF to get like 655 fuel, which as soon as you load the savegame is reset to maxammount of fuel possible (fuel capacity..)

Use XVI32 (if you're on windows. Tongue)

Why is a hex editor accessing the network?

And to the original poster:
To really understand what you are doing when using a hex editor you need to know the following concepts:

If you're really liking it, I suggest you play through it first without cheating. It's a whole different experience calculating how much fuel/crew/ships/modules you need instead of the "oh, I ran out of fuel, time to load up the editor." If you're really really stuck, load up a previous savegame (and remember to save a lot in different slots, which will eliminate any need of cheating if you save well).

Don't the melnorme come and save you if you're stranded the first time?

I believe you have to meet the Melnorme in a system first before they come to your rescue (for a price).

If that were the case, I doubt the not-visiting-the-starbase runs would have worked at all.

I cannot speak from experience, but wouldn't the 10 fuel be just enough to get you to the first system where you can meet the Melnorme?

The Melnorme come to your rescue even if you haven't had contact before.

And the amount of fuel you start with is more than enough to take you to Alpha Centauri. Though you should spend a bit of fuel on planetary missions so that you have something to trade, because any equipment you trade in, you can never get back in a StarBase-less game.
