I love exploring in Star Control 2. But no matter what I do, I lose at a (it seems to me) pre-determined date. The black ships come to the earth system. Even if I kill EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM IN THE SOL SYSTEM (I've done it, too), I still, inexplicably, lose. They appear in my communication screen and inform me that they have destroyed my homeworld. With what, may I ask? I wiped them out!! How do I stop the auto-lose-at-a-certain-date? I just want to explore! Thanks!

Maybe they are able to use Sa-matra from HyperSpace. The black ships are there only as spectators. And possibly to protect sa-matra from you.
--------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- SPOILER WARNING! Spoiler on the next line. Anyway, the date can be prolonged by sending the utwig and the thraddash to harass the kohr-ah. SPOILER WARNING! Spoiler on the previous line. --------------- --------------- --------------- ---------------
You should make that happen and while at it, you can also explore. That way you will also find many incredible things you otherwise wouldn't. And isn't it quite easy to patch UQM into ending 1000 years later than it normally would?

The game doesn't care how many Kohr-Ah Marauders are in the Sol system; the "u r pwnd" sequence is initiated when the center of the Kohr-Ah Sphere of Influence (the circle on the starmap that shows their "territory") reaches Sol. And the Kohr-Ah don't take the Sa-Matra with them; it's still in its initial location during the whole Death March incident.
What you're after is the De-Cleansing Mod, not the Time Mod. The latter slows the very passage of time (measured time, i.e. the date shown on the right, not the speed at which the game runs), making certain necessary date-triggered events quite painful to wait for. The De-Cleansing Mod, however, simply pushes the Kohr-Ah Death March 100 game years in the future, meaning that you'll virtually never get to that point.
And indeed, it's really not recommended to wait for the Kohr-Ah to begin their cleansing, because they'll kill several alien races you'd have loved to talk to.
By the way, there's something in your reply that intrigues me. "I just want to explore"? Are you following the plot then or just wandering around?

Thank you for turning me on to the De-Cleansing Mod. That is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I played Star Control 2 on DOS in about 1992 and loved it. I remember having to do the whole thing more than once because of the auto-lose at 2159. I did win it, but was not satisified because I couldn't keep exploring after destroying the Sumatra. So after I found Urquan Masters I thought I'd finally get to explore the whole quadrant. Forgot about the auto-lose...
To answer your question, I guess I'm exploring. When I come across sequences in the game I go ahead and do them, but mostly I'm exploring.
I got to thinking about when I played it originally and went looking through my old stuff. And I found it! I have the original DOS game; all the 3-1/2" discs, the map, the manual (dated 8/92), everything!
De-Cleansing Mod here I come!
