Fatal crash
« on: January 03, 2008, 05:10:14 am »

Hello,

I recently upgraded from v4.0 to v6.2. However in the middle of talking to the starbase commander my system froze, repeating the last moment of the conversation. After that it restarts itself. When I get to the desktop a window pops up informing me "The system has recovered from a serious error." I tested further and discovered it happens when talking to anyone.

My OS is Windows XP Home SP2.

Has anyone had this problem, or knows how to fix it?

I'm assuming from context you mean versions 0.4 and 0.62 respectively. If XP is rebooting itself, it's safe to assume that something is wrong at the operating system level; probably a broken driver. A lot has changed since 0.4 and you haven't explained which settings you use, so I can only give generic troubleshooting suggestions:

  • Try switching UQM's sound output from OpenAL to MixSDL (Advanced options/Sound driver). OpenAL has been known to cause mysterious problems in UQM. If that doesn't help, try turning sound off completely in UQM.
  • If you are using OpenGL graphics (Advanced options/Use framebuffer set to "never" or resolution other than 320x240 or 640x480), try switching to pure SDL (Use framebuffer "if possible", resolution 320x240 or 640x480) and vice versa.
  • Ensure that all relevant drivers, especially graphics and sound, are up to date.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

EDIT: Yes, disabling OpenAL worked. Thank you for your help.
