Slylandro Keep Killing Me
« on: February 02, 2008, 09:55:09 am »

Hey gang!  New user here.  Glad I found you all.  I played the heck out of this game when it was on the C64 and WANT to enjoy it again, but having a hard time getting passed all the probes!!  I know I have to find their homeworld to get the destruct code, but how can I cope with them until then?  They move so fast, etc.  I hate to ask it, but is there a cheat or tip that will help me get passed them?

welcome!

if you collect all the minerals from the sol system and use the RU's to
buy moduls for your flagship, that should help beating the probes.

a second crew pod is allways helpfull and i whould install more turning jets than thrusters.
a second dynamo unit is helpfull too.

good luck.

there is a cheat that gives you unlimitet recources, but that whould make the game
boring.

No need to cheat, just fill all your thruster slots. You can do that from the very beginning, just sell your Ion-Bolt Gun and you'll have enough RU.
And you'll be able to outrun the Probes.
Remember, first fill your thruster slots, turning jets are a lower priority!

Also, I find that Earthling Cruisers are a decent pick against Probes until you find something better. I'd recommend that you first practice it in Melee before using it in the full game, though. First unload your two nukes on the Probe (not both at once, wait a few moments so that if the first doesn't hit, then the second does). Continually flee from the Probe and, if it gets close enough, use your secondary (the point defense). If it runs away, attack it with nukes.

EDIT: Concentrating on thrusters first will help you outrun ANYTHING, and will also save you fuel and time.

YOur tips worked!!! Thank you so much!  It's now all coming back to me!!!

And yes, I don't know what I would have played it on if it wasn't a C64.  Amiga possibly, but that time line doesn't sound right to me.

Thanks again!!!

Odd that no one gave the advice of using a Spathi against Slylandro Probe. Simply run away and shoot BUTTs.

Or run away. I can kill story mode Slylandro Probes with both Earthling and Spathi, but the last time I played through the game I just ran from them anyway. Force of habit.

I actually prefer to fight them each time. They're an awesome way to get RU. Using the self-destruct code was something I did regretfully. (Did I even have to?)

Well he could have played the original SC on C64 earlier and just be messing up that and the sequel I suppose.

I know I never played it on a 3DO.. What other platforms did it come on?  Maybe my timing is off and I played it on an early pc??  I just assumed I played this game all those years back when I had a C64.

I just did a little research.  SC2 came out in 92, I would have been 20 and most likey played the game on my first pc, a 486 DX2 25.  Does that sound right?

Yes.  x86 machines running DOS were the original target. The 3DO release was a year or so later.
