Nut Case for Star Control

Mrnhrm and Chenjesu WIP Themes
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:20:11 pm »

Ahoyhoy out there. Recently I've been playing around with an idea of re-invisioning the first Star Control game again, and ideas on extending the basic premise to it. I started playing around with some samples in Star Control 2 from the mod tracker files, and eventually came up with 2 short, still WIP based pieces on the Mrnhrm and Chenjesu, here they are :p.

Hopefully with input I can help improve these tracks. Still learning mod tracking in itself though, so sadly no .mod files of these yet D:.

I absolutely love the Chenjesu theme.
I think that the Mmrnmhrm theme could use some improvement though. It should sound a lot more metallic/robotic. What I would do is apply (using Adobe Audition) the following flanger effect to the whole theme (or to the individual samples if you're planning on making it a .mod):
Initial delay time: 6 ms
Final delay time: 6 ms
Feedback: 80%
Modulation rate: 2 Hz
Wetness: 65%
(Special Effects and Sinusoidal enabled)

Also, you might want to experiment with some ring modulation (but don't use it on its own; first lower the pitch a lot, then apply the ring modulation, and then raise the pitch so that it's back to its initial value. This will give a higher-pitched ring modulation, which therefore sounds more robotic. I suggest using the VST plugin BJ Ringmodulator.). You might also want to vary the wetness of the flanger too, and possibly even its delay times -- just be sure to keep the initial one equal to the final one.

Sounds pretty metallic to me. It starts off fairly dark and metallic, but then moves onto that faster tempo, feels like a big factory pumping out the Mrnhrm

Added more stuff to the Mrnhrm theme, hope it's alright (also added more echo to some of the instruments, flanger on FL made them sound oddish).

Now I should work on a little "Colony, Research Station, Mining Outpost and Discovery" ditties next...

This is what I meant by "metallic/robotic".

EDIT: You might want [me] to apply this effect only to the drum samples, as otherwise the other instrument gets obscured.

I like the sort of echo effect to that, but the melody has been muffled by the flanger in that Sad.

Anyhow, WIP Ditties done.

Mrnhrm Theme.mp3 reminded me a lot about Space Crusade for the Amiga.

Really nice. They sound like the old .MODs, do you think you could turn them into those things somehow?

Mrnhrhnrhmrnmhrnmrrmnrmhrnmrhr or whatever - I like the beat, bass, et cetera. I didn't like the melodies at first, but on a second listen it sounds passable. The note sequences themselves aren't that bad, they could be quite catchy. The line could be rhythmically more intresting, and the sample/sound that plays the melody is a bit too samey the whole time through. The panning of the melody is quite nice, by the way.

Chenjesu works well. Great mood.

Keep it up!
