Now announcing the next Star Control 2 net melee tournament for the month of April! All players will be using 200 point fleets this time, a departure from the horrendous handicap tournament we had in March. Speak up if you plan on attending.
-----[Date]
Saturday, April 19th, 2008.
-----[Time]
* 5 AM Sydney * 7 AM Otaki * 12 PM Los Angeles * 1 PM Denver * 2 PM Chicago * 3 PM New York * 7 PM London * 8 PM Paris * 9 PM Helsinki
-----[Place]
#UQM-Arena on irc://chat.freenode.net.
-----[Tournament Structure]
We are using Swiss tournament rules. Losing in the first round does not eject you from the tournament. You will instead play against other defeated players in subsequent rounds. There will be three rounds, then possibly a final bout between the two top participants if a clear winner has not emerged.
-----[Tournament Rules]
1) There is a maximum fleet size of 200 points for all players. 2) Only one of each ship type is allowed in a fleet. 3) You must have your team set up before connecting to another player for melee. Do not adjust your fleet once you've connected to an opponent. 4) No Thraddash Torch. 5) Foul play will result in you being ejected from the tournament. This hasn't ever happened before, and hopefully it never will.

Well that does it. You didn't take the advice to merely adjust the handicap point structure. While continuing to ban one of the more interesting ships from your tournaments. I played last time because it was different. Boo I say! I will not be attending.

I will not be attending. Elvish Pillager said he wouldn't play if I left the ship in. It was either you or him, and I'd personally prefer not to bother with that wretched thing.

Thraddash takes waaaay too long to finish a fight with it. The guy just sits taking pot shots at you or constantly runs away using the Afterburner.

It would sure be swell if Elerium could fix his crappy connection so he could play in the tournament too.

Howdy guys, I've read the tournament thread over at the SCDB, and I decided to participate too. Hopefully I'll end up somewhere more decent than the last place.

Firstly I'm in if i can manage to stay awake till 3 in the morning that day. Where do you live? Western Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan? I picked a time that was good for Europe and North America, but obviously that whole slice of the world draws the short stick. I'm really sorry about that, but there's not a lot that can be done. If 10+ Aussie players were to show up spontaneously, I'd tell them to host their own tournament.
Secondly the Torch may be annoying but the Spathi ship or druuge ships no more so. I mean okay the eluder isnt as fast but its the exact same strategy and the Druuge once it gets going is almost impossible to keep up with and or shoot at. all the player has to do is point at the enemy and shoot (does the druuge ship or the torch move faster with their abilities?)
I think you mean "no less so" in that first sentence, and going by that I'm gonna have to call you on it. Spathi's range is rather short. The only thing that sucks about Spathi is that people try to play it like they do against the computer, forcing much longer matches than necessary. The truth is that Spathi needs to be played somewhat aggressively to get any mileage at all. Druuge can throw itself at a nice high speed with recoil, but after reaching a certain velocity the ship is simply flying out of control. A Druuge going at an insane velocity is very easy to catch and kill flying backwards on a wrap-around.
I think it may be time for me to re-host that Fraps video I made with Koowluh showing how broken Thraddash can be.

But please don't include the music this time.
Ha ha ha, screw that. You guys can turn off your sound if you don't like Mario Twins. The music really helps drive the message home.
