Something more in the UQM Universe
« on: May 29, 2008, 12:21:50 pm »

Not an extension of the universe, but another game, video animation, or card game even

an RTS game, like Homeworld, pitting the Alliance of Free Stars vs the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls...
a 3D exploration/adventure game (I suppose... the REAL Star Control 3)...
A card game, similar to Munchkins in its blend of comedy and adventure...
An animation, with a $3 million budget... Hey, Hitch-hiker's guide to the Galexy was success enough, right?

I mean, this universe is really great!  Undecided Good enough to sell for sure, and the world could have another Star Control experience...

So when Toys for Bob released the rights to the code, did they release the rights to the ideas, plot, races, and characters?

Then again, this is the wish and longing of every fan of such a sort... whether of books, games, or whatever.
I'm sure you all can empathize

I think a movie about Star Control would be great. This video is what I think a good SC movie would look like.

TFB did not release the rights to the ideas, plot, races, and characters. But they have a history for allowing anything which isn't for profit. You should still ask them though.

I was thinking this was an awesome idea, ever since I tried out Warlords: Star Wars Homeworld Mod I thought there should be a Starcon version made too.

It's a shame I couldn't find any though.  Angry

Here's a video that convinces me a Starcon Homeworld mod would rock. This clip just reminds me of how the Sa-Matra battle would look.

Tons of Pkunk would take care of the shield just fine, and a good escort fleet to serve as cannon fodder would do well in bringing the Vindicator to the Sa-Matra, and hitting the detonate button.

It could work, with a bit of re-programming, you can utilize Saajuk's code to do damage to the Sa-Matra with the Vindicator's attack/bomb, like in the final mission of Homeworld 2. Only Saajuk can destroy the planet killers, not any other units. And instead of Saajuk, it's the Vindicator. Am I right?

As well, with more programming, you can build multiple modules for your "mothership" to make the Vindicator more useful. Unfortunately, it won't be exact, since these ships have unlimited fuel, but the RU can be used in multiple ways. Like only the Vindicator, or Starbases can build ships, or there could be beacons about the battlescape in which you own that can call in ships (using teleporter code), but costing RU to be able to do. Lander craft would serve as the resource collector ships, modified to build anything else necessary.

Only other issue I can think of is that if we're to have a HW2 Starcon mod, we would either need tons of different ships, and outrageously powerful precursor ships, or a few outrageously powerful ships. I kinda like numerous, because we could get away with having Black Spathi Squadron coming in at different times.

Then, of course would have to be the missions and mission order. So, no exploration unfortunately, but clever toss ins, and an opportunity to have one kickass Sa-Matra final battle. With tons of ships duking it out against it's shields in the final mission, and the Vindicator dealing the final blows; it would make a truly awesome cinematic end.

Unfortunately, I'm crap for programming, but that's an idea I can toss at least.

If you've played Homeworld 1 and/or 2, you can se how awesome that final mission would be. Especially considering how many ships you'd see fighting simultaneously. Hell, even watching mini-melees going on (taking advantage of weaknesses and such too, how players would in the original Starcon) would rock; and Shofixitis being able to detonate to knock out squadrons and large ships would rock too. Of course, they'd be cheap to make many of; yet, ridiculously easy to kill in RTS, to balance the Glory Device. Can't make it too easy to use, right?

The spoiler function works now, you know.

I don't think we should now suddenly add spoiler tags everywhere.
Only in threads which are about helping someone who has not yet completed the game, would I want to strictly enforce the use of spoiler tags.

Yeah, but it just looks so intrusive. Plus, I like the size method. It doesn't obstruct too much, especially when you have a spoiler within a sentence, and you actually have to put some effort into revealing the spoiler.

If anything, the size method seems more secure anyway, and it looks neat too.

BTW, it was more of a spoiler for Homeworld 2 that I was hiding, just in case nobody has played, or beaten the game yet.

I mean, what looks better?

Something that looks like
(click to show/hide)
? And jarrs some things up? Especially if it's a praragraph?

or

Something that is harder to read, yet keeps some consistency with sentence/paragraph structure, and looks like morse code. Plus, takes a little more effort to read or reveal?

or

An ugly black or red color over/highlight which is inconsistent depending on browsers, operating systems, and system/browser settings; might I also add CSS? (Cascading Style Sheets, for those who didn't take web design)

Note: It just came to mind, if anyone is using a constant CSS to read web pages, yes, spoilers will pretty much become useless, regardless of form; depending on how the CSS is designed/operated.

----

Sorry about derailing the topic; but I just had to clarify that. Some people have their methods of hiding spoilers suitable to their tastes, in case a message board is a bit awkward in how they hide spoilers. No offense to who codes the boards BTW.

And if you really want to become a total dick with spoilers, you can always do this:
(click to show/hide)

or

(click to show/hide)

Size method doesn't work for people who set a minimal size in their browser (as I do).
Colour does not work for people who are not using the standard theme.

...and highlight/color doesn't work for people using the non-standard Internet Explorer. So then basically, only the spoiler tag works for everyone. Tongue I don't like it when people use the size method anyways because it means I have to open a text editor, highlight the tiny sentence (which can be difficult), and then copy and paste it onto Text editor.

EDIT: My 100th post! Cheesy

Sorry mate, it;s not record time. Valaggar has that honour. Got to 100 within a week.  He was averaging 7 per day at one stage. Valaggar would now be the forum's top poster if he didn't keep going through his embarrassing posts and deleting them all.

I used to average 4 posts a day at the SCDB (annoying the others), but it would have been more if I had internet access on the weekends. Actually, my overposting and nonsense got me banned from the SCDB a couple weeks ago.

Yes, an animated movie would be an excellent addition to the Star Control canon!  It should probably be a trilogy, though, since the game is too long to compress into two or three hours.  The only better thing to do would be to make it a musical.
Incidentally, I have ideas for an H.P. Lovecraft crossover sequel.  One of the new species is based on my fellow deviants at Frungylovers, but with a horror twist slightly inspired by the Japanese voices-related PNF post.  Deviant schoolgirls combined with Orz?  I can do that.
As for the spoiler tags vs. small text option, spoiler tags may be intrusive, but you can read the hidden text once you've pressed the button.  And that reminds me, I should probably edit my personal picture so that the caption is easier to read.

A Homeworld 2 mod would be a great idea! That way, you wouldn't have to make the entire game... Unfortunately, I'm all ideas, too, seeing as I'm not the hard-core fan as I would like to be.

(Some of you seem to be such a type and would fit the bill, if yall were programmers and really wanted to)

I am definitely glad for Serge, Mika, Micheal, Chris and Alex who put together the UQM project! Only are there more who might start another and stick with it?

I have more ideas, but the honors of implementing them would go to the modders themselves, and they would implement their own ideas anyway. That is one of the rewards for perseverance and devotion Smiley

(medium-length pause)

.... Nevertheless, I will present them anyway, because they are still fun to consider Smiley
So the mod wouldn't be a simple reproduction of Star Control 2, but rather a new game based in the universe, during the same war (or perhaps the first war, Star Control 1). You would play as the Humans or Druuge, Umgah or Ilwrath (sorry for any misspellings).

In other words, it would be a truly RTS game, not an attempt at giving RPG aspects to an engine designed to run an RTS game... And it wouldn't be centered around the same Precursor ship, the Vindicator. Yet at the same time, would not detract from the awesome combination of humor and adventure...

Well, back on track, unfortunately me and my ideas, are only that.. ideas and probable artwork. (See other topics I posted)

So, not to repeat myself, there are the links to my ideas/art. Sorry about the plugging of my stuff, and for being a dick about spoilers too.

Anyone that did, however, manage to see what I wrote in the spoilers unaffected; How'd you like it? At least give me credit for getting the right amount of lines to make it look like I wrote something with red writing and glow. Furthermore, how did you like the Shining reference?
