How do I have my cake and eat it too?
« on: May 30, 2008, 06:36:34 pm »

Well here's the deal. Recently my roommate thought it would be funny to make an unspeakably disgusting website my homepage on my normal PC. He didn't realize how little I know about computers, therefore the blow was doubly absorbed. He changed a bunch of my settings so it was a huge pain in the ass to change everything back (He did this on explorer and mozilla).

So, here's the question:

Is there a way to really get him back? He uses a mac, and I've heard of ways to change every page visited into another page. I'm not going to put anything disgusting on his computer, that's just pouring more shit on a shit pile. I'm thinking maybe make every page he goes to a rickroll?

I've heard of this trick on PC where you get spybot S&D, then lock the users internet settings, but mac isn't supported.

Any tips/tricks you can offer me?

If you're willing to invoke the Scorched Earth doctrine, reformat his hard drive. He'll likely do the same to you if you go this route, so copy everything you'd want on your computer onto a portable drive and hide it somewhere he'll never find it. This is probably not a good idea, but it is much classier than taking the parts out of his PC and sledgehammering them.

I've considered that, but that's taking it way too far. I was thinking of something involving his internet settings, or maybe something involving a macro program.

If he has a laptop, just steal one oft hose extremely hard to replace cables and hide it (like the miniDVI to DVI one). Or hide the entire thing. If he has a optical mouse, sticky tape the sensor. If he has an iPhone, call 1-800-SPANK-IMAC or something.

Or do something unexpected. He messed with your computer? Drink all his beer. That should teach him.

Oh, and all of the above are pretty bad ideas.

I really like Decode's idea. I didn't realize how powerful applescript is. What I think I'm going to do is try an applescript that opens up like 500 rickroll windows whenever he logs onto the computer. Also, drinking all of his beer is duly noted. If I hide his laptop he'll just take mine, and I don't want that to happen. Operation tape over the wireless mouse is in full swing. I'll keep everyone posted with updates.

What you can do to your roomie may depend on what kind of access you have to the laptop. Full root  level access will let you do all sorts of irritating and harmless things. Or, for that matter, just access to his account.

For example, you might be able to add a simple script to his login which
basically beeps the terminal, waits five minutes and does it again.
Or something that opens a web browser page to some scam site, so it looks like he's got a virus. It helps to know some basic shell commands like
echo and sleep for this sort of thing.

Something that sets his clock to a different time would also be fun. Set him
ahead a few minutes at each login and wait to see what happens.
