Help with content directory??
« on: May 31, 2008, 08:10:57 pm »

Hey there.
I hope you moderators still check these messages.. it seems a while since anything has happened.

Anyway. I have the Ur-Quan Masters v0.6.2 for Linux. I have had a look at the command line options and I wanted to adjust the content directory path using:

$ uqm -n=    *the directory*

I can't get it to work. I have even tried to use this command to use the default directory, but that doesn't work either. I get this message:

The Ur-Quan Masters v0.6.2 (compiled Jan 27 2007 15:12:22)
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY;
for details see the included 'COPYING' file.

Netplay protocol version 0.3. Requiring remote UQM version 0.5.4.
Initializing base SDL functionality.
Using SDL version 1.2.12 (compiled with 1.2.10)
Using config dir '/home/celyn/.uqm/'
Fatal error: Could not find content.

What file (or folder) should I be pointing it to, and why will it not work? I have tried the content.uqm file and each of the parent folders....

Thanks in advance! Smiley

In the top of the dir which you want to use as your content dir, there needs to be the "version" file. In the same dir you should have a directory named "packages", where you should have the
"uqm-0.6.0-content.uqm" file.

If you've compiled UQM from source, you should have the regular installation instructions in doc/devel/unixinstall. A typical layout is described here.

Wow thanks for the fast reply.
I have version 0.6.2 ....
Do the names all of the files matter? I have re-named most of them and at the moment it still doesn't work. Here are the files...

/uqm/content/version
/uqm/content/packages/uqm-0.6.2-content.uqm
/uqm/content/packages/uqm-0.6.2-voice.uqm
/uqm/content/packages/addons/remix/uqm-remix-pack1.zip
/uqm/content/packages/addons/remix/uqm-remix-pack2.zip
/uqm/content/packages/addons/remix/uqm-remix-pack3.zip

The save files: /home/.uqm/

So... do I need the 3domusic.zip and where should I point the command to?
But... Thanks so much anyway!

And... I am looking in to it... I will post a reply if I do get it working! Thankyou!

Oh, there was a bug with trailing slashes at some point. Try without it.

The slash at the end of the path.

But I see now that your problem was something else. If you use the short form ("-n"), you shouldn't add the "=" sign. A bit confusing, but that's how it works on GNU.
So "uqm -n /usr/share/games/uqm/content" or "uqm --contentdir=/usr/share/games/uqm/content".

Oh, and one last thing, I can't seem to find the data for the starmap anywhere...
I have seen posts about how to edit it, but I think that is for Star Control 2, rather than UQM 0.6.2.
There is the uqm-0.6.2-content.uqm file, but I don't think it's in there at all.
Also I used the terminal log to see where it was getting the files from when you play the game, but when I opened the starmap it said nothing.

All I want to do is vaguely edit the game in my own ways - and I don't intend to do anything else other than play it Smiley

Editing the starmap in UQM (not SC2) has been discussed extensively on this board e.g. here.

The starmap data is compiled into the main executable; you'll either need to download the source code and recompile (a bit of work, if you don't do this sort of thing normally) or try to figure out where it's stored in the executable file (extremely tricky).

Yes, I know that the plandata.c is in the source code and not the one I have, so I will probably have to recompile...

At least you're trying to sort things out for yourself.

SDL_image not found.
SDL_image isn't installed properly (i.e. either the include or library files are missing from the appropriate system directory). Note that you need the development packages, not just the runtime packages, for each library you use.

If your distribution has a package manager, look for a package named something like SDL_image-devel and install it.
