Nintendo DS Homebrew
« on: June 19, 2008, 05:06:46 am »

So I got a DS recently, and Im a little curious about the whole homebrew situation, but I dont have a good grasp on how it works/how to get it working. Any DS users who can explain it to me?

As I understand it, "homebrew" is the way of referring to indie games on the DS. Like people writing their own games. But Im not clear on just how it works.

I think Shiver understands that part; it's the "situation" part that is unclear to me at least. Are you inquiring about how homebrew is implemented, how to get a homebrew game running on a DS or  the state of the homwbrew community or all of the aforementioned?

You need extra hardware, and a Micro SD card to use with that extra hardware, to be able to play DS homebrew...
As always, Wikipedia is useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_homebrew

(Also note that, questioning about Homebrew on a forum is not a great idea, since it might be "borderline illegal". Said borderline illegality restricts me from actually posting any more information about it here; I'm just playing it safe right now. And no, I don't actually have a DS, so don't bother sending me a PM and asking for details on this, since I really only know the basics from hear-say.. Tongue)

There is nothing illegal about running your own legal software on your system which you bought legally, let alone talking about it. Maybe this is not true in countries like China, Libya, Iran, or the USA, but this forum is hosted in the Netherlands.

Im inclined to think with meep. I mean Im not talking about bootlegging DS games, Im talking about things like being able to put pictures on my DS, or indie games, etc.

Thank you for the wikipedia link.
