In the nickname thread, I noticed a big response to the subject.
What's you favorite race?
Favorite maps? strategies?

Personally I think toss have a bit of an advantage over almost everyone. I usually don't play brood war, and in original zergs are completely useless in the long run unless you're really sneaky. A terran turtle can easily wipe out anything zerg has, even ultras. My favorite maps are non-money, most maps that dont have stacked minerals. There are a lot of different strats depending on what race you're playing and where they are. My favorite, although the least effective, is cannon rushing with toss or building proxy gateways. hilarious. if you're playing someone inexperienced, its so funny to see their reaction.

Lately battlenet is overrun with veterans. I can't join a game without playing against a 5000+ win record. I'm starting to give up hope.

I like all of them. My favorite gimmick is Dark Templars with Corsair support against Zerg. Corsairs fly around popping overlords like balloons, then Dark Templars move in to shred anything they can. This is used to gain map dominance, but I'll need Reavers or a switch to a ridiculous number of Zealots and Dragoons to finish the game.

Not sure about vanilla. Broodwar seems fine to me and those fanatics in Korea agree.

Uh, yeah. Starcraft has one of the highest skill ceilings you can find in an online gaming community. I don't have any advice for you, I doubt I could do better. There should be plenty of bad and average players to beat down when the sequel comes out. At least for a year or so.

I always play as terran. If I can live long enough, I build 4 nuclear silos and then start pounding the enemy with nothing but nukes all the time. It never works though, but it's fun.

As for maps, I prefer a map that is unknown for all players. But in battlenet everyone just wants to play Lost Temple.

I haven't touched the original after Broodwar came out. Now I'm just anxiously waiting for Starcraft 2.

Starcraft sucks. It's ugly, stupid, annoying, and the sides aren't really balanced very well.
And I really, really hate those little boxes with the stupid talking faces on the control panel.

I don't like Starcraft either, I liked the cutscenes and the overall feel all three races had in design and style but I just don't like the game, the story felt too bland if you ask me. It also basically keeps RTS stuck in the mechanics of "evolve like Starcraft or die" syndrome (C&C Generals comes to mind then when C&C3 came they went to a hybrid sidebar to keep the SC and C&C interface fans happy, Dawn of War's interface although the game relies less on resource and micromanagement), plus the obvious "competitive" title it has (along with Koreans calling it a "national sport") in where it just become a gigantic clickfest which tires yourself out. The last time I played Starcraft was as a mod with a friend online, he tweaked the AI too so you could fight a ruthless computer, and if you ask me he did a better balancing job than Blizzard did.. plus he made the Battlecruiser something to be feared, yet balanced.

I guess my favourite side has to be the Terrans though.

Uh oh lol, dont let a Korean hear ya say that!

I love SC, though its been a while since I played. Terrans were my favourite race, but I enjoyed playing Toss and Zerg as well. I really had more fun with the campaign than multiplayer though. Definitily looking forward to SC2!

And as to improving, well it takes a time building up skills, I mean if you watch pros play, its like they are clicking everywhere at once! Best hope is just to play against whoever you find, and enjoy the game. If you can find some friends that play, then its that much better since youll enjoy it over a veteran who Zerg rushes you, says GG, and is gone.

Really?  Everyone I know plays Brood War almost exclusively.  Brood War has a wider variety of availible strategies, and is also more balanced.  What is it that you prefer about vanilla SC?

Anyway, I can only play Zerg right now.  I'd like to learn the other races, but I'm pretty new to the game.  I enjoy Starcraft a lot, but I'm not very good at it.

I play Starcraft from time to time.
I actually do like the money maps because I don't like micro-management too much. I've recently learned how to use the terrans better; get 3-4 barracks + medics to begin with, then push to tanks and just park them in the middle of the map with turrets all around. nothing can get close (unless you're too slow and they mass guardians) and with your allies, if they're capable, it's usually a fine game.

on what server(s) do you guys play?

*P.S.
I'm not sure it's really veterans, could just be hackers from old time or new hackers. It was possible once (maybe today too?) to get your recored boosted in some way.
I think it's a 3-minute timer before a game turns from "draw" to "surrender", right? so with the right program you could leave it overnight against a computer (managed by the hack program) and get a win every 3 minutes, thus 480 wins for each 24 hours.

But I guess Blizzard fixed that at some point in their updates, cause I don't see too many of those people anymore.

I usually play on US east or Asia.
Yeah, I remember a program like that. It used macro similar to the WC3 farming hack
