Hi,

I have often wondered how the Ur-Quan move, those tentacles look like they would be good for hanging from trees but how would they move on say open grassland, or do they have legs like cattapillars? Obviously it's not needed to be explained in the game as they hang around in ships all day but nevertheless it would be interesting to know what their natural means of locomotion is.

Centipedes. Caterpillars aren't carnivorous.

This is what the SC1 manual has to say about the subject:

I remember the SC2 manual giving a different story, but I checked it and it says they "resemble the predatory caterpillar native to Earth's Hawaiian Islands". So it seems there's a meat eater in that family after all.

I always envisioned the Ur-Quan home world as being a really dense tropical forest, where a caterpillars agility might be of use. If they look like caterpillars, only quicker and bigger) they could probably make good speed through dense vegetation, outpacing any prey.

So that is what those spikes are for. I guess this is the Ur-quan represented on the cover

Yeah, that makes sense. It seems hard to imagine them moving very fast on open plains with those clawed tentacles or whatever appendage it is they have.

Now that I think about it, don't caterpillars travel underground as well? I might be wrong ,because I really don't know much about insects, but it's a farily frightening idea that an Ur-Quan might either sneak up on you from the treetops OR burst out of the ground underneath you.

Now that I think about it, don't caterpillars travel underground as well?

Typically catterpillars don't inhabit underground, their sensory vibrissae would get damaged, and they don't have the digging capacity. Those would typically be worms. But an Ur-Quan seems to have no vibrissae, only scales, therefore it actually might get pretty fast down there.

Yeah, but Ur-Quans 6 (8?) tentacles would be pretty inefficient in carying the 10-meters body, especially when compared to mellipedes.

I thought they only had four tentacles - the ones you can see. They also have legs. Roll Eyes

I guess I just assumed that from the SC1 manual description. At any rate, the tentacles are separate from the claws they use to "cling tenaciously to the roped ceilings of their Dreadnought craft," and unless an Ur-Quan has claws randomly sticking out of its rear end, I'd imagine they appear on the ends of legs.
