Toys for Bob not going for a new Star Control and don't need your help
« on: June 30, 2008, 04:44:11 pm »

Now that I have your attention, I think we need to come to terms with the fact that TFB no longer need our help to get the rights for the name Star Control back from Accolade Infogames Atari. Truth is if they wanted to do a new Star Control they could. The only thing they don't have is the name. If they were serious they'd say, "Thanks for the support, but Atari won't budge, so we're releasing it as 'Revenge of the Ur-Quan" and here's a demo movie." Have you seen that yet? Me neither.

What they do need our help with is wanting to do it. We need to keep them buried under request begging them to make that sequel, or even better, to re-launch the franchise.

It hasn't been about the rights for a long time -- since before UQM was released. What they need is for Activision (or another party) to cough up to money to pay the salaries of the crew while they make SC2+1.

And they keep telling us that if we write lots of letters then they can show Activision that it is commercially viable

To be honest, I'm not sure I would like to see another commercial SC game, having in mind the esthetics and the taste of nowadays gamers. It would probably end up being a FPS by some strange set of event and named Star Control Arena: Extinction!

I only see a new SC liked by the fans being made as an indie game out of love and passion. Having in mind PRIII and FF are men in their mature years with families and bills to pay, I don’t see this happening.

The point was made on Dueling Analogs today that no matter what the fans say, that doesn't guarantee a commercially successful game, and that the producers are smart to give the fans the finger.

I kinda agree.

But truth is if they did announce SC3 it would be a giant spoogefest. I've been pent up for years waiting for it.

Someone needs to get out more.

On a serious note, I'd be as happy as the next fan to see a SC3 from the masters themselves. However, as it seems unlikely at this point, I think harassing them with piles of mail probably isn't productive. A single fan letter may be nice, but a pile of mail all requesting the same thing (from the same person) is probably annoying.

Truth is if they wanted to do a new Star Control they could.

I remember during the announcement last year that there would be a scheduled Q&A session on IRC with PR3 and FF, Fred was answering some questions on the forums.  Someone asked him "Why do you make great games like Star Control, and other games like Madagascar and Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure".

Fred replied that there are some games that they make because they love it and others that keep food on the table.  Video game development has always been a complicated thing.

At the moment, it seems that Activision is choosing the games for TFB to work on next, and they're trying to stay from Intellectual Property titles.  The Star Control trademark doesn't bother me much; they could call it The Ur-Quan Masters 2 for all I care.

As for the mass mailing messages to Alex, I just hope that it's not too annoying for him to receive.  We just have to keep hanging on.
