My next bright idea
« on: July 19, 2008, 09:11:47 am »

So I was thinking about these leagues that I run. As most of you know you have 200 points to play with and you build your fleet by purchasing the ships at their default prices. Invariably this means that everyone ends up with Chmmr, Kohr-Ah, Androsynth, Mmrnhrmr, Druuge and Zoq-Fot. Nary an Ur-Quan, Yehat, Chenjesu, or Mycon to be seen.

To counter this I propose that for the next league, the fleets be selected by auction. Let the free market decide their price!

What would happen is that a limited quantity of ships would be auctioned off to participants. I've worked it out that for 8 players there would be 3-4 of each ship. That would mean on average each fleet would still have about 200 points on current prices.

Ships would be drawn at random and bid for amongst all participants. Each player would have a certain amount of credits to bid with - probably 200.

This has been done before for individual match-ups, but never for a tournament. I did it once a long while ago with Shiver (I think?). The actual auction part is very absorbing but does take quite a while. It was very interesting to see what prices the ships went for. It might be that this phase eats up the whole first session, and may be go into the next.

I suggest that you are forced to keep the same fleet for the duration of the tournament.

The tournament structure would likely involve splitting the participants in pools followed by a short KO part (similar to soccer world cup). This would keep it shorter than a league but more satisfying than a KO tournament for those that lose a game early

This would be beneficial in two ways
1) it would be fun
2) It might contribute to costing the ships more accurately

I'm pretty set on doing this but feel free to make any comments that might inform how it's done

I like the idea. If you do it, make sure to collect all the relevant data Smiley

There's no "no dupes" rule here, right? So if there's four Druuge in the pool, I could theoretically get four Druuge on my team.

As to keeping the same fleet for the whole tournament - it's not like you have any other ships to switch to, is it? The only exception is if you bought more than 14 ships, in which case I suggest you be allowed to switch your extras between the rounds of the tournament.

One annoying little issue - What's the bidding order?

Bidding order is the most ingenious part. I type up the ships, print em off, cut them up, and put them all into a hat. I draw them one at a time.  Old School!

Permitting dupes would be interesting. If you got 4 druuges, some other guy could get 4 earthlings - so it should be okay. I would be interested to hear thoughts on how that would be abused.

I meant the order of the players. Someone has to bid first on each ship, and second, etc...

I didn't expect there to be a way to abuse it, and I can't find one. Getting multiple Kohr-Ah, for instance, looks kind of cheap (since nobody is likely to want to weigh down their team with multiple Utwig against the other players) but that's balanced by the fact that Kohr-Ah are going to be really expensive anyway, since at most half the opponents are going to have Utwig at all.

hmm, this line of thinking suggests that the results here won't help balance anything except this very format. It'd still be a cool thing to try though.

Yeah, there are a lot of alternative match formats mentioned on the wiki that I've never actually seen people play.  The one that looks the most interesting to me is where you choose up to 100 points worth of ships for your own fleet and 100 points or more for your opponent.

The downside of this one is that you can't simply load your fleets and play, but on the other hand, there's no time-consuming auction process.

I can hardly be without pointing out that my league fleet doesn't have a Kohr-Ah, Androsynth, Mmrnmhrm or Zoq-Fot-Pik.

Anyway I'd like to try this idea of yours.

When I tried this before with one other person, we haggled in the chat room without guidelines. That isn't going to work with more than two participants. There's going to need to be a bidding order to cycle through. I recommend you put the player with the highest remaining points at the front of the line, then decide randomly between players that are tied in score.

It has no controls...

But really, this is way off topic. Like, out around Groombridge, and the topic is hanging with the Pkunk.

Have you tried this out any further on IRC, or is it one of those ideas that are just lying around until it can be implemented properly?
