So.. This post is mainly for finnish people Cheesy because we are talking about UQM translation to finnish, but I write english so everybody know what I talk here  Wink
I think many of you know about this already, but because here is no post about this yet (though I didn't find)
I decided to make a post.

So as I said UQM FIN is UQM a translation (mod) to finnish.

Yeah I know that this is really old stuff (last update 2006), but working well still.

See here for a list of translations.

As for writing languages other than English on the boards: if some text is directed at everyone, it should be in English, and if it's directed at just a few people, it should be in a PM.
As for anything in between... I don't really want to spend much time thinking about hypothetical cases, but I guess it would depend on the length, reason, which board, and whether the thread has an English topic and introduction.

On the whole, it's probably a good idea, even when discussing translations on the board, to post in English. There are several reasons for this:
  • Package maintainers and other people who would distribute translations may not speak the language of the translation. For example, if I were setting up Debian packages for UQM translations, it's a lot easier to work out what's changed in the translation if it's described in English.
  • Internationalisation problems found when making a translation can be of interest to the UQM developers or other translators. For example, in the screenshots above, I see that UQM has too little space in menus, status panels et.c. for one very common term: "polttoaine" ("fuel", literally "combustion substance" or "stuff to burn"). "Löpö" would fit, but may be too colloquial. Smiley I imagine other translators have run into similar problems.

That said, when addressing the end users of a translation, using the translation's language is an obvious advantage (if they understood English perfectly, they wouldn't need a translation, would they?). If in doubt, I recommend using both languages.

from your webpage:

* UQM FIN is a UQM translation to Finish. *

It really gets on my nerves when that is spelled incorrectly. I forgive aboriginals and such for it, but not Finnish people.

Er, aboriginals? Are you referring to the Saami, or what? I agree with you though, it's amazing how often there's a problem with the double n.

I made a post about translations a while back on PNF, based on the link meeps already provided here.  It's impressive that so many translations are already complete, and nice to know that more people will be able to appreciate the game. Has anything been found out about the Japanese voice files? Even if the voices can't be used, are the text files floating around already?

Darn you!

I thought this thread was to announce UQM was finished, eg FIN, as in old movies and the like.

Not that I want this project to end, but I'd like UQM to be to a finished state so that the team can start on some new goals, like making Star Control 1 with SC2 ships.

If Dragons doesn't beat you all to it.

The download link was defunct, but I managed to dig the file from archive.org. I've uploaded it to my webspace and it'll stay there until I lose the space. That'll happen sometime between 2013 and 2053.

So, here's a working link: http://koti.mbnet.fi/tuukkar/uqm_fin_099.zip .

By "old movies" I guess you mean "French movies?"
Although I will admit that I thought it was somebody asking about the game's ending, too =)

I very much doubt that UQM development will ever be truly finished.  If nothing else, the release of newer and newer operating systems will be a constant cattle-prod to future support of the program.  The good news is that the code is open source, so if you want to see a spin-off project started, you can always dig in yourself! =)
