Does anyone remember this show? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7520243.stm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_(TV_series)
I don’t think it showed in either Finland or the US so I won’t be surprised if I just get blank stares here.
Anyway, I vaguely remember it as a child, and was entrely startled to see the DVD boxed set of all 52 episodes sitting on my mum’s bookcase last time I visited. Apparently she purchased it on a whim from Amazon. How strange. Anyway, I’m convinced that God has something to do with this.
It’s the best show ever. It’s made in Japan but set in mythical ancient China.
After watching a dozen or so episodes I’ve noticed that every one is almost exactly the same. The four companions come across a town besieged by demons, priest gets captured, two others get captured, Monkey saves them, and the demons are forced to see the errors of their ways. And because Buddhism is the major them, there is always a moral to the story.
Lots of really cool fighting with what appear to be garden implements, and the dubbed dialogue is very hilarious.
I recommend this in whatever form to anyone.

We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

Sounds like it's The Monkey King / Journey to the West.
The same source material also spawned Gensomaden Saiyuki and, though in this case I have to strain to see the connection, Dragonball Z.
I read a reduced translation of the original. It was good, but I can see how it would have gotten repetitive. Some of the encounters differed only in which of the Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist doctrines it was making fun of.
