Why don't all races have point defense lasers?
|
I have a couple of suggestions for melee. They probably won't offend anyone who wants to keep the game "as is" too much since they don't change anything significant to gameplay. Here they are:
Suggestion1: Make Earthling Cruiser laser no longer shoot at planet. Justification: Hitting the planet with your point-defense laser cannot ever serve a useful purpose, other than draining your battery, which is useless. Often times it is useful to use your PDL in orbit to hit asteroids, enemy ships, enemy incoming fire, etc. When you're low on battery and you hit the planet by accident, you will not be able to hit what really counts, causing upset and possibly death. It would be nice if we designated the planet a "non-target" to save valuable energy for other targets.
Suggestion2: Since Mmrnmhrm limpets only apply to one mode, have ship graphic represent which mode they affect. Justification: In Vux vs. Mmrnmhrm it would be useful to know how many limpets are on which form, to plan strategy accordingly. At present it only shows how many limpets are on total, not distinguishing which forms are affected. I don't know how easy/difficult it would be to make the ship graphic in the top-right change between X and Y and show varying limpet stats, or if another option to display that information is available.

some other suggestions for melee, but not in-game:
When playing PvP, how about making the first ship pick secret, so that both players must pick without the other seeing?
... And what is the behaviour of ship selection after a shofixti kamikaze mutual-kill? Does it default to player1 picking first or does the person who got kamikaze'd have to pick first? The latter would make more sense to me, to reward the player who successfully used their glory device.

I like the second post ideas better, than those of the first post. First post's PDL is, I think, justified - be carefull and just don't hold the secondary - it doesn't matter how many targets are being shot at - the energy cost is the same. The Mrnmhrm limpets thing, I think if changed, better to have both forms affected together, not separately as it is now. Glory device second pick is really good Idea - Shofixti Kamikaza should be rewarded. Secret pick, I think, will be really hard to implement...

The first suggestion is mostly irrelevant, but should not be too difficult to code. I hope you don't expect that to be implemented into vanilla UQM. I am mildly in favor of the idea, so if someone else wants to write up code that makes the Earthling PDL ignore the planet, I'll put that into the balance mod. If not, no loss really.
The second suggestion isn't worth the effort as far as I can tell.

Meep said he would fix this for the next release.

Personally I don't see why the PDL not hitting planet shouldn't be included in the vanilla version of UQM for the sole reason that I imagine it was an oversight by the creators (probably programmed the PDL to "hit any object") as opposed to a deliberated choice.
As for the Mmrnmhrm thing, well it's a UI issue so I don't see why it couldn't be included... but it is up to how much work the coders want to do. It's probably a non-trivial amount of work, and I respect that the coders are giving their free time so I guess it's up to them. I imagine a mod could probably easily handle that change later.
...
As for shofixti... I could see arguments for both sides actually, whether the person who got kamikaze'd should pick first or second. I guess it depends on how advantageous you see using the glory device to be, whether it's too easy and should be penalized by forcing the player to pick next, or whether it's challenging and deserves the reward of forcing the enemy to pick first after they get gloried.

Shofixti would be mostly useless if it didn't give the controlling player second pick after a successful kamikaze kill. Not even worth 5 points.

Update: PDL no longer shoots at planetary bodies in the balance mod.
